Hummer Environmental whackos, er environmentalists, would have us believe that the Prius is the end all in auto conservation.  Not so fast, when one considers the total environmental cost of building a Prius versus  a Hummer, guess which one wins?

This is an example of the total real cost of doing something, once again, managerial accouting is relevant to our daily lives.

OUCH!!!! talk about taking a swing at what the green guys are after…. I hope GM doesn’t have this in there hands, they would be touting this every where they could to get customers back. There is only one thing, the majority of people purchasing this crazy vehicle are not purchasing it for its overall concept. trust me I know, cause I finance these for people all th time. The bottome line is their monthly pocket book which honestly is not CURRENTLY being affected by what is happening in Canada. The are more interested in the amount of money they are saving themselves by spending less on gas….And I highly doubt that the toyota prius will only last 5 years (100,000/ 20,0000) 20k being the avg miles a conusmer drives in a year. Honestly can you see a hummer on the streets for fifteen years??? I know I can’t. To many idiots driving them like off road race vehicles to let that ever come close to happening.

Actually one saleslady in San Antonio told me that used hummers are being snapped up by former Yukon Suburban driving moms, wanting something different! New Hummers are too high she said. A Hummer is a GMC pickup chasis so yes I think it will last a while, a Hummer is really too heavy for very much off road duty other than in Iraq where it never rains anyway so not much danger of ‘sinking in’
But I thought the nickel mine story was interesting.

tisk, tisk, tisk Dr. elam… you should never underestimate the craziness of some of the younger generations… we often like to push the limits of our vehicles hence the booming aftermarket community. I have seen quite a few morons make their vehicles go through more than Iraq could throw at it on a good day!! lol… Also I understand the concept of the frame lasting long, but not a GM motor, which can be quite costly to rebuild given all the new technology attached to them hence the need for most of the techs these days to be ASE certified.

Indeed, a country that invented Monster Trucks, Tractor Pulls, and spray on hair can be counted on to do some weird things….

I think this is a great article. Who would think that the overall environmental cost of a prius would be almost twice that of a Hummer. With Al Gore making his global warming presentation yesterday to Congress, the American people are slowly but surely being put on high alert making them aware of the overall impact of CO2 and its effect on the atmosphere. To me, global warming is a fact (I watch too much National Geographic and The Learning Channel)and for Congress and their “scientists” say that Gore is basically full of crap is appalling. Maybe Gore should take congress to the Nickle plant in Canada and show them the environmental disaster there and how global warming could eventually turn our country and planet into a dead zone for a couple of hundred years. I truely don’t believe we are destroying our earth though. The earth is over 4.8 billion years old, our time here is a flash to earth. The earth breathes on a much larger scale. No matter what we humans do, the earth will “live” on. Through bacteria somewhere in the ice caps to small mammals in a forest, life will survive. What we are doing is hurting our chances as humans to expand to other planets and galaxies eventually. We are limiting our time on earth by abusing it. If we take care of our planet, the human species will prosper and expand. If we pollute our earth and don’t care for it, humans will eventually become extinct and just another small page in the history book of our planet. So Im going to buy a Hummer as soon as possible!!!!

Jeff, I am not sure what you are saying.
First, global warming is a fact. And gee it could turn out planet into a dead zone for a couple of hunmdred years! Without intonation it is impossible to tell if you are joking or just what you intended. By the way, did you know Al refused to take an environmental pledge that day that he would not consume more energy than the average household? ON the other hand you don’t believe we are destroying the planet. Then there is a ‘jump’ to the idea that we are hurting our chances to esapnd to other planets. How so, is global warming preventing us from launching rockets? THen we are limiting our time on earth.
Jeff, have you been to the Grand Canyon? Lots of wind erosion there but the Grand Canyon just keeps going as though nothing happened.
Walter Williams reports that three volcanoes in the last 150 years produced more carbon dioxide than man has since he arrived. What we are up one degree in one hundred years? I argued for a geology course in our core but did not succeed in getting it. When you take geology the first concept is geologic time. Things happen SLOWLY in geologic time. That is what is so absurd about Gore’s argument, nothing short of a meteor crashing thru the atmosphere and then managing to stay large enough as it burned on entry to make a big enough splash so to speak to matter. Ice ages come and go, but slowly. Seas advance and recede, slowly. If the earth were in the shape Al says, we could not see it clearly from outer space. All West Texas was once an ocean. Now a desert, did that change our fate? Oh well….take a look at the Barbara Striesand house on previous posts, that is how she and Al live (oh and John Edwards in his 28,000 footer) but not how we should live….
