Sarkozy Hungarian born Sarkozy won election with a whopping 84% of the electorate voting. He won on a 53-47 tally. He has opposed the 35 hour work week and promised to revive the sluggish economy.  I suggested  a few blogs back that this would be a decisive election for Western Europe which is in danger of being overcome by more free market economies of Eastern Europe.

Here is a European comment on the election.

Here is another suggestion that the French are drinking in the Last Chance Saloon.

Most impressive is that the whole thing, the run off and the general election, took a matter of weeks not months or years. Why can’t we do that?

If we did do that, then when would all the mudslinging get done? A matter of weeks is not enough time for the American public to be overwhelmed with every dark and shadowy, inane aspect of the people we are voting for. I don’t know how we, as a public, would be able to decide between who to vote for if we were not made aware of, by countless commercials and newspaper ads, who did or did not smoke (or inhale), what they may or may not have felt about the Vietnam war, and by golly, I personally must know exactly how many community hours each candidate served while in middle school. Too much money is spent on a population where less than 65% of registered voters actually vote and even if you did vote, if your views do not align with those of Big Tobacco or the oil industry, some of the wealthiest lobbyists in Washington, DC, your views are probably not truly represented. Now while may have come as bit of a rant, (ok, it was more than a bit) I am a voter and plan to vote in every election that I have a chance to, because it is one of the few exercises of my rights that I feel is important as a citizen of this great country. While times may not be the best that could be, I am more than sure it could be a lot worse.
