I was in stunned amazement to discover that not one person in ACCT 3110 knew who Maria Bartiromo is.
The irony is that one student was doing a book report by a female at CNN on how to advance the cause of women at work.  Yet no one knows who Maria Bartiromo is?

I will expect some posts on the blog about this, turn off MTV, E, Dancing with the Stars, etc.  and, well, you figure it out.

I certainly would not use Maria Bartiromo as an example, proponent, spokesperson, for women at work. She represents the opposite of what many professional executive women have worked very hard for at many corporations. Her behavior, interpersonal interactions, and quotes ..such as calling ‘soveriegn funds ..so sexy’ in the NYT last week would get her nowhere in forwarding women in a truly professional envirionment. I am sure there are better examples at CNN or MSNBC.

My point was not that she was a model but that she is famous, which is what I said and that the class had never heard of her.
Still most recent accomplishment is an interview column in Business Week with some of the top CEOs around like John Thane. Sue Herrera has been on the show longer than Maria but I never hear much about her, there are others on CNBC that generate buzz, quick name two………

Although I understand the legitimacy of the rhetoric mentioned above, I reject the denunciation of calling something sexy as a negative. Calling something sexy is exciting and generates one of the great feelings of being a woman! Power is sexy. Women are sexy! One could then postulate that women are powerful.
Furthermore, the male dominated business world is not the “end all, be all” of what could be defined as professionalism!
A diversified portfolio, the stock market going up, gaining a higher interest yield on an investment… all very sexy =) God Bless the few women who are out there in the middle of the “dirty deeds” of the elitist male dominated world of business! Smiling…
Kudos to you for commenting though… this discussion needs to occur more!

After doing my little read on Maria Bartimoro, I have begun to admire her. Even though I’ve flipped through her columns in the businessweek many times, I took it as a task to actually have a look at the questions she raises at highlight figures who influence the economy. There is one in the December issue to Ron Paul, “What is the most important change you would make?” to which he answers that he aims to lighten the pressure on the Federal government in pumping money into the economy, which is a little vauge because he does’nt say “how”, so she then asks ,”and that means what?”. I’d say you have to have the guts to do that.
i think she’s one of the shining stars amongst all the women in business, and can be followed as a model.

I personally have been watching CNN for years, so I’m familiar with Maria. She’s actually been in business reporting for quite some time and she has done a lot behind the scenes. She’s very intelligent and insightful. I’ve recently started watching FBN, Fox Business News, I really enjoy Happy Hour. Though, I wouldn’t say that host Rebecca Gomez (one of the hosts) to be a female role model anytime soon…she misprounces way too many simple words and names!!

As I looked up Maria’s history and where she started from, I could almost see myself in here. I couldn’t believe all the things she has done. So I sat back one afternoon and watched her on the Closing Bell and just loved everything she had to say. She knew what she was talking about and everyone respected her. She is a better role model to me than Oprah. Thanks prof. Elam, you truly got me into something once again that I will enjoy.

Better than Oprah? Oprah is a phenomenon, the only comparisons are perhaps Aaron Spelling or Desilu Studios back in the 1950s, even then none of them managed to branch out into books, television, magazine, broadway, movies, some of that but not all. And Oprah has stayed on top, always tough.
But yes Maria has done well, she has a great look for tv…..
