has opened many large stores, and the ones in the trendier neighborhoods may well surprise. This article reveals that indeed people revise their shopping patterns, and quickly. Many churches and other charities offer Second Time Around Stores, I suspect they will be doing better in months to come.

It’s funny how before hand one would not be caught in a thrift store or in Goodwill. If people would know that you would buy your clothes at a Goodwill, you were seen as a poor person. Now you will be amaze who shops at Goodwill. I like the auction deals that they have. I just purchase an antique wooden purse that I won at an auction. I love it. Every time I have a couple of extra dollars and time off I head out to my favorite Goodwill.

Its nice to see that Goodwill is making progress. I have shop there myself. I have also notice they have some high end merchandise for rock bottom prices. It all goes into supply and demand. The old saying goes, “one man’s trash is another treasure.” I will donate some of my stuff there later this week.

Trendy, next, sidewalk coffee cafes? Yes this trend is catching on, as mnay clothes as everyone has, this is a realistic recycling alternative. Interesting story about the purse. I hope by the way that ‘antique’ purse was not made in my lifetime…..

I shop there often looking for antiques but have often ran into new goods from Target. Unfortunately with these goods comes a price that may not be appealing to the lower income brackets. The nicer goods come with a stiffer price. I even encountered a dealer coming into the store and buying all the items from Target. They need to put a limit on these sharks so the less fortunate can enjoy them also.

Well just like every other business during this tough economic time. Those who go far and beyond their call will succeed. Goodwill is taking full advantage of the technology available to entice shoppers into their stores. I think people are starting to shop smarter and thrying to strech their dollar. I believe Goodwill will become a contender in the retail business if it continues to be innovative.

Several years ago, you wouldn’t hear about people shopping at the Goodwill stores but now it’s like any other store. I myself wouldn’t stop there knowing that they only sold used clothing but I was mistaken they do sell new ones and very affordable ones specially during this hard times.

Well look at how burlington and K&G and other stores like that have taken off. You can buy 2 suits for as low as 199 opposed to going into Dillards and paying 300 + for one.

Indeed price value retailers do better in recession, what will DDS do, we will examine options for DDS as we go thru the semester
A reason for the blog is to link what we study in class with the real world, clearly this story about goodwill has hit a nerve with many of you, think strategy, think value for the buck, think benchmarking best practicesLikeLike

I realize that Goodwill is getting good publicity for having high end stuff in their store and trying to clean up their look and that is admirable but… this will only last for a couple of month’s. This in no way will become a TJ Maxx or Ross. Goodwill is not a socially acceptable store to shop at no matter what brand you are buying. I am in no way cutting down people who shop at goodwill, i have too, i’m simply stating that this trend will not trend for long unless Goddwill is willing to evaluate the reason they went into business and change up a few things to make them a more prominent store to compete against.

National unemployment is only 9.4%, what will be the reaction at 12% unemployment? I showed today in cost class that mcd is doing well, the latest business week reports shopping at WMT is on the increase….LikeLike

The reaction to a 12% unemployment rate will be, no doubt, cheaper shopping. But thats only 12% of the nation, what about the other 88%? Is 12% unemployment enough to make goodwill shopping a lasting trend? I shop at TJ Maxx, no doubt my favorite because of prices and they carry top brands like lucky brand, betsy johnson, jessica simpson, kathy van zeeland, etc. but I don’t buy those brands all the time because their still pricy. If you go to goodwill and find a pair of jeans from lets say, ed hardy, that was originally $500, with Goodwill bringing it down to 15% of that price their still $75. Would you buy them? I wouldn’t when i could go for something way cheaper.

In normal economic conditions Goodwill is a friend in need type of organization with recieving free items and related to using free services and free inventory. Goodwill is able to provide substantial discounts with clothing, electronics, and household item to lower income families, but in a slower economic recession and times of high national unemployment conditions they may help lower and also provide simular benefits to middle and upper income families that may be stressed directly from unemployment or even in foreclosure type conditions. Choices have to be made and Goodwill may be one choice that families are having to make in adjustment to fit their smaller budgets.

Goodwill in respect to other stores do not get to pick the latest styles or what they think will sell. The get only what people choose to give away. Their selection is not as wide as other stores like other discount stores like Ross or TJ Max. Their strategy is meant well, but I think since they don’t have the benefits of other retail stores, they need to tweak it to their customer base. As Rose stated a pair of Ed Hardy pants at the Goodwill were still 75.00, granted they would be $500 at a well respected store; I think they need to keep with what most people look to them for..a bargain at “dirt cheap” prices. I went to the Goodwill by my house..most of it was not what I would wear, I had to really look. When I did find something it was more than the rest. About 30% more. There was a Prada purse, for $160. Goodwill to me seems to have a few exceptions to their strategy.

Well everyone laughed at Kia and Hyundai a few years back too. As i speculated, wait till unemployment gets to 12%…goodwill is a quick learner, what would you price the prada items at?
$500 pants, geez the markets really were overcooked.LikeLike

Goodwill has always had very nice clothes but people were ashamed to say they shop there. Its amazing that when times get tough people are willing to say they shop at thrift stores. Some of those I bet have been shopping there for years. You never know what you will find at Goodwill.
