No surprise, most students cannot accurately estimate what they will owe on students loans at graduation.

I suspect this is how schools have managed to raise tuition without much resistance, one one is writing a check to no one connects money wtih the event. And so we have no inelasticity of demand.

Take a look at what students estimate and what they owe.

Oh yeah, the majority of us are pretty stuck to revolve around debt the rest of our lives. What happened?? I lived, had fun and worked. I went places, I did things and enjoyed every minute of it. Where am I now? In debt. My parents never saved anything for me or showed me what I would need for college or that it was even an option for me. But as for the majority of students, I am not in as much debt as they are! How much are my monthly payments? Lenders will always give you estimates can’t wait for my grace period. Again if students owe this much money that the government is funding and giving away, am I stupid not to take it. Why shouldn’t I enjoy myself? And if God forbid if I die tomorrow, who’s going to pay it back???

During the Viet Nam war potential draftees went to Canada to avoid being drafted, the ultimate tune in drop out trip I guess. Jimmy Carter pardoned all of them so it worked.
Hmm, will future debtors perhaps seek a haven elsewhere, Australia, Spain, a new industry in new identity?

In the 1930s students formed VFW groups, no not what you think
They became Veterans of Future Wars
Their reasoning was that eventually given the war like proclivity of the US, they would be veterans of some war. Fearing they would be killed before their benefits kicked in, you guessed it, they demanded their veteran’s benefits now on the theory they would not be able to collect if killed in a war……perhaps that idea will make a comeback.
