Is Your Job Endangered is certainly a must read for all those in college at this point.

Last night Bruce Howard talked about the accounting profession. This article refers to professional licenses as sponges. I would reply that what has happened is the union mentality mind set of excluding people from jobs thru license requirement. There is certainly a reason to license doctors lawyers cpas engineers architect, but now all want on the 'professional bandwagon.'

My take is that we do not study accounting to that you can make journal entries, though sadly that is the way a lot of the study is portrayed. One studies accounting and finance to understand the big picture and analyze what is going on, make recommendations, and such.

I also believve there is good reason to pursue CMA and CIA, most of you will not be working for a cpa firm.

As Bruce Said, it pays to be well read.

This is so true. A former co-worker mentioned to me to make sure I do sit in for the CPA or get some certification in accounting. Her ex-husband received his bachelor’s degree in accounting and is having a difficult time getting a job because he does not have any certification or CPA. I am so glad Dr. Elam that you mentioned to us about getting either a CMA or CIA and that we could do this with our bachelor’s degree. No one has ever said this to us before. By getting a CIA certification this will open doors for my at my current work place.

Thanks for this post I hope everyone reads it, the BBA degree is the ticket to sit for a certification, the proliferation of degrees and on line pseudo colleges means it is harder to tell who really has a grasp of accounting, or any other discipline, hence the independent certified exam becomes even more important
    thanks Rachal

The article is very accurate with reality. However, there are jobs such as accountancy and bookkeeping that society constantly need through time, since money is the core of every business.
