No accounting is definitely not one of them. Here is the Kiplinger List. I don't know that this is necessarily the correct order from ten to one but I would agree with their first place choice. Come on now, take a guess as to what that might be.
Actually a concentration in statistics with a sociology major is worthwhile, but not many socio majors do that.
It would probably be difficult to include into the article but it would be nice to give us an idea where the data was collected from…in terms of region. I agree with most of the selections but feel that the listed majors are not “immediate walkin opportunities” but rather ones that take time to discover and will more than likely involve relocation into cities (or even countries) where people are not willing to go.
One can compose a top ten list for every career field in majors not hot for their category. For example, in programming COBOL is still a viable language even though it has been with us since 1959 and most young programmers prefer the newer or more recent languages. However even studying and mastering older forms of COBOL can prove quite lucrative because many less technological places in the world that have inherited old systems still run internal and local systems that use old technologies. (I had a programming instructor in Corpus Christi that traveled overseas every summer to work for some “back road” governments where he was paid a nice sum to assist with old systems that still ran on COBOL). I now often read where at job fairs it is not unusual to find recruiters looking for applicants that know COBOL.

Before WW II and the GI bill and Pell grants, college was pretty well limited to those that really wanted to major in a particular field. Now colleges tout a degree as a ticket to job success. Most of the fields listed handily employ lower paid teachers but charge the same tuition as engineering or accounting. It’s a big win for the college, not the student expecting a great job.
