Wednesday Sept  4 2013

Here is an opportunity to network on a monday night. I have class but students are certainly encouraged to sign up and attend.

By the way this is why we are staring a Toastmasters Club here. At such an event you have a short time to make a favorable impression. Will you be prepared?

Be sure to

Dress appropriately, business casual, no thongs, shorts, etc

Have a business card with your name, e mail, cell phone, Identify yourself as a Texas A & M University San Antonio Student, yes spell that out, in the college of business, major, and expected graduation date. There is no point in gong it you do not take a card since then on one would have a way to contact you later.

Anticipate the small talk, be prepared when asked, well how is school there, to have an intelligent, coherent answer.

Example, well how is that school doing?

Wrong Answer, oh I finally found it, looks like it will last till I graduate!  (This is not funny)

Right Answer, I have been most impressed at the concern of faculty and the counselors over my future. the undergraduate accounting enrollment grew from 164 to 204 from Fall 2012 to Fall 2013.

or, well I did not know what to expect but have been pleasantly surprised, the parking is great, the prof had an extensive list of resources for us and a schedule of professional accountants coming to speak on campus

Be sure to ask the people you meet, what they do, where do they work, what has AWFA meant to them, what sort of programs do they have,

And it goes without saying that you will have read the website, see registration below, and familiarized yourself with the organization

Asking obvious questions that could have been answered by reading the website only  makes you look smaller, think about  it, registering, showing up, but failing to show enough interest to learn about it with questions like, hey what do y'all do here anyway, will not be well received.

Okay, go get em…

I have addressed this group and delivered Continuing Professional Education Hours.

At the beginning of the year, ASWA (American Society of Women Accountants) was renamed and rebranded as Accounting & Financial Women's Alliance (AFWA). This change reflects the organization's focus on women in accounting, finance, and related fields. AFWA reaches out to women to support their career and professional development with education, networking, and scholarships.
Please join the San Antonio chapter as it celebrates its new name and website with a launch and membership party. We will gather for networking and fun with our flight themed event – Reaching new heights with AFWA.
