College of Business students at TAMUSA will shortly be asked to fill out a survey on extra curricular activities. While we are and will be a commuter campus, there is no reason we could not branch out in the larger dimension ar cultural experience. A few semesters back I noted hat only one student out of two classes knew that the line
it was the best of times
it was the worst of times
came from Charles Dickens' novel A Tale of Two CIties about the French Revolution. It is inexcusable that someone claiming to be a college graduate would not know that.
I note that Tennessee Wiliams' A Streetcar Named Desire is playing at the Little Carver Civic Center. I saw a production with Faye Dunaway at the Ahamason in Los Angeles decades ago. It is am American classic and that is why it is performed so often. It got a fine review in the SA paper today.
I would suggest that outings to such performances could be planned with commentary afterwards or before at a suitable outdoor venue. such experiences and discussion are to me the essence of what one might call the University Experience.
A fine exhibit of how Norman Rockwell posed real people for his paintings has been at the McNay. That would be another good example of a cultural outing
Anyone interested?
