Americans often think that the US leads other nations in healthcare (access, delivery, and cost), manufacturing industry (automobile, and computer to name a couple), and technology (computer, robotic, research). The fact is we lag behind many nations. It never ceases to amaze me how much more advanced European countries have become. I have indeed heard that Estonia is the “home” for Skype but what impresses me is the aggressive movement toward a paperless society with the “Smart ID” Card. When I lived in Germany, nearly 10 years ago the Germans were using debit/credit cards with “chip and pin”. I just received mine from USAA about 2 months ago. Today, without Chip and Pin my card would be useless at a local merchant. The federal government does use a chip and pin card (called Common Access Card) for identification and access to buildings and computer information systems (i.e. log in to your computer). When is the US (both Federal and State governments)going to proliferate the chip and pin for government issued ID cards such as driver’s license (or identity card), that can be used to digitally sign applications, word documents, government forms, etc.? Can you imagine the increase in productivity achieved? The US can no longer have a wait and see approach to a proven system used in Europe for the past decade. My 2 cents.

I suspect the sheer size of the US compared to a smaller land area like Germany or a tiny country with let’s face it one ethnicity makes it easier to effect change. And then we have the issue of 50 states and a divided Congress that basically hate the other party. A formula for deadlock….
