Katie Beal Brown created her own vbrand of hard seltzer – Ranch Water. A mash up of agave, lime juice, and flavoring to make a drink

    that tastes like Tequila.

The website now lists three varieties.

She was working in mareting in NYC but the family had roots in West Texas. This is an interesting start up story during a pandemic. the product has taken offand is selling well.

I have not seen anything about what source of water she is using, The hard water prevalent in West Texas would not seem to be a good base but apparently that has not been a problem.

My BUAD experiential class visited an elementary school to present for Junior Achievement.  I am posting this as JA is looking for volunteers to record

    presentations.

    Dr. Elam,

Thank you for sharing Junior Achievement! We hope we can begin a new partnership and provide a valuable learning/volunteer experience to your communications department.

Below are my responses for the professors questions….

In addition, I have attached a guide and video (https://youtu.be/4PF30svMjio)  that we provide to our volunteers. Hopefully this can also give a better idea of what it would look like to become a JA volunteer. – side Note: We will still conduct a virtually training with the volunteers also to answer questions, discuss specifics, etc.

Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students on workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on and remote learning programs for K-12th grade. Educators in K-12th will request a program from us that is in alignment with their grade level and/or curriculum. Once we have the class request the volunteer would visit the classroom, via one of the delivery options below, to visit the classroom and deliver the program.

*Volunteers receive all program materials, access to digital applications (PPT’s, student worksheets, etc.) and attend a training with a program manager (me) prior to visiting classroom.

    Volunteer Delivery Options:

    1. In Person = where the volunteer can deliver the entire program at the school.
      1.  DUE TO COVID WE ARE NOT OFFERING THIS OPTION FOR FALL SEMESTER
    2. Remote Live = (also known as “beam-in”) Volunteer visits classroom virtually via zoom, teams, etc. to deliver one or more sessions. Volunteer can either:

    a. Lead a discussion

    b. Guide an activity

    c. Be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on a topic within the session

    1. Remote Video= Educator shares one or more videos

    a. Lead a discussion

    b. Guide an activity

    c. Be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on a topic within the session

In this option, the recorded video can be one short video that students watch at some point during the program, or be session-specific recorded videos. There’s a lot of flexibility here for you as the professor on what you want your students to do – This is what my recommendation would be for our college students, since we typically run into timing issues as they are also attending school/work during the time ES/MS/HS is in session.

With the Remote Video option, volunteers can choose how they would like to record the videos. We have seen several different ways we like to allow the volunteers to be creative. Examples would be: Interview style with a partner, they share a screen and show a PPT, or simply like a U-tube video. The infographic I provided also has some video examples for your review.

We would love to have his students teach our New HS program-  JA Business Communications. Here is a quick brief on the program:

JA Business Communications Students focus on communication skills necessary to succeed in business, including communicating up, down, and across organizations, talking about performance, and writing in a business setting. In the course project, students develop a comprehensive business plan to share with potential investors and stakeholders.

Hopefully, this has answered everything. If you have any additional questions please don’t hesitate to call/email. Like everyone we are continuously learning on how to best navigate this New Virtually learning environment.

Thank you for being such an Awesome advocate for JA!

    Take care,

Tom Hanks knew George Roy Hill's neice and nephew in High School Hill had directed Butch Cassidy and The Sting, both big success. Take a read.

    Dear Mr. Hill,

Seeing that I am very close, dear, good, and long-lasting friends with your nephews Kit and Timothy, and your niece Kate, and that I have seen your fantastically entertaining and award-winning film 'The Sting,' starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford and enjoyed it very much, it is all together fitting and proper that you should 'discover' me.

Now, right away I know what you are thinking ('who is this kid?'), and I can understand your apprehensions. I am a nobody. No one outside of Skyline High School has heard of me, but I figure if I change my name to Clark Cable, or Humphrey Bogart, some people will recognize me. My looks are not stunning. I am not built like a Greek God, and I can't even grow a mustache, but I figure if people will pay to see certain films ('The Exorcist,' for one) they will pay to see me.

Let's work out the details of my discovery. We can do it the way Lana Turner was discovered, me sitting on a soda shop stool, you walk in and notice me, and — BANGO — I'm a star. Or perhaps we could meet on a bus somewhere and we casually strike up a conversation and become good friends, I come to you weeks later asking for a job. During the last few weeks you have actually been working on a script for me and — Bango! — I am a star. Or maybe we can do it this way. I stumble into your office one day and beg for a job. To get rid of me, you give me a stand-in part in your next film. While shooting the film, the star breaks his leg in the dressing room and, because you are behind schedule already, you arbitrarily place me in his part and — BANGO — I am a star.

All of these plans are fine with me, or we could do it any way you would like, it makes no difference to me! But let's get one thing straight, Mr. Hill, I do not want to be some big time, Hollywood superstar with girls crawling all over me, just a hometown, American boy who has hit the big-time, owns a Porsche, and calls Robert Redford 'Bob'.

I hope you have read through all of this, and have enjoyed it.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Your Pal Forever,

    Thomas J. Hanks
    2394 Webster St.
    Alameda, Calif. 94501

    P.S.
Congratulations on your Academy Award for Best Director. I was rooting for you all night. We would be very honored to have you present at our Evening of One Act Plays on May 3rd. I will be appearing in one of them and so will your niece, Kate.

    Your Good Old Buddy,
    Thomas J. Hanks

    Dear Thomas:

Or how about this Scenario? —

I am driving wildly down Broadway Terrace trying to escape from my insane nieces and nephews when I hit a boy commuting to Skyline High on his pogo stick. Before he slips into unconsciousness I tell him of my good fortune in finding someone for my next movie who has not stunning looks, is not built like a Greek God, can't grow a mustache and is willing to change his name to Humphrey Bogart. The whole part is to be played in a cast up to the neck and BANGO — you are a star!

    Your pal,

    GEORGE ROY HILL

    Hello CoB faculty,

Below is a message from your University Library concerning ILL, operating hours, and course reserves. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know how to help.

    On ILL services:

Interlibrary Loan services will be able to resume borrowing physical materials starting August 20th. However, please keep in mind that we are completely dependent on other libraries to fulfil requests. With most libraries operating on reduced schedules and with restrictions on access to their print collections, we anticipate that there will be delays in filling your print book, media, and microform requests.

On physical library services/ opening hours:

The library will providing a mix of in-person and remote services for fall semester.  Due to the rapidly changing public health situation in San Antonio, we are encouraging everyone to check our website for the most current hours and services before making plans to come in.  If you are considering creating an assignment that involves using the physical library, please let me know, so I can help you assess whether it will be possible to do with our safety measures in place.

    About course reserves:

This fall, in order to keep students safe while still trying to provide an important service, the University Library has decided to focus our physical course reserve books collection on face to face and hybrid courses.  We will not automatically pull any physical books for online courses, although faculty are still welcome to provide personal copies for reserves.  However, we also want to make you aware that, for the safety of library staff, reserves will now follow a self-service model.  Reserve materials will be located on open shelving that is accessible to students rather than behind the library’s information desk.  Students will be encouraged to use the reserves materials at their leisure but in the library only.  Since they will no longer check them out at the library’s information desk, there is a greater possibility that your personal copy may be lost or misplaced. Please keep this risk in mind if you do decide to leave a copy with us this semester. Personal copies left by faculty members in previous semesters will be kept on reserve for courses unless we hear otherwise from you.

Due to changes in the bookstore’s policies and booklist availability, moving forward faculty are highly encouraged to request the physical books they want the library to pull for reserve for their face to face and hybrid classes.  They should also check with their subject librarian to see if electronic books are available for their online courses and the library can link to those in their online course reserves system.

Our goal for our course reserves services for fall 2020 is to create the safest possible environment for our students while continuing to provide support for their learning in these uncertain and rapidly changing times.  If you have a need for course reserves that is not covered by our policies, please let us know and we will work with you to get students what they need to be successful.

    Thank you,
