    What’s In It for Me

Or Why Take an Interest in ACCT 2301

Okay so you are not an accounting major. But you have to take ACCT2301/2302. Get serious, get involved, Here are the five reasons why you should.

    1. Dazzle Your Co-Workers

Non-accounting majors snoozed through ACCT 2301. But you didn’t. There will be regular meetings at the company / non-profit /University or whatever organization you join. Financial reports will be a regular part of the meeting. Your mastery of accounting knowledge will allow you to move from one statement to the next, ask pertinent questions, and well, yes, even show off a bit. Your buddies think this is hard stuff, you will show it’s easy, if of course you paid attention in class. When the Comptroller presents the cash flow statement watch heads turn when you ask

Are we really generating net cash flow NCF, or just covering up the failure to do so by converting non-cash expenditures like depreciation to cash?

    1. You might end up running your own business!

My Dad took retirement from now defunct Gulf Oil at age 55. His ‘retirement pay’ was $350 a month. He had to do something to make a living.   He obtained the oil field maintenance contract for a Gulf Oil Field, otherwise known as a roustabout contract. He had to buy trucks, hire a crew, plan a budget, submit a bid, and be absolutely certain, that if accepted, he would earn a profit.   Dad was not an accountant but he was a chemistry major, no stranger to numbers or balancing equations. He borrowed $6,000, paid it off in six months, and never looked back. Could you do the same now?

    1. Be a responsible Board Member

As a college graduate you will be asked to participate in the fund raising activities of non-profits. As a responsible Board Member, you will need to be able to read financial statements, evaluate a budget, and set target net income. Regrettably, most of your fellow board members did not pay attention in ACCT 2301 and are clueless as to how to achieve the goal desired.   A mastery of ACCT 2301 /2302 will make you the Master of the Universe.

    1. Master Spreadsheets and Budgets

No matter your major, you will be asked to submit or prepare a budget.    Better yet, consider obtaining a MSFT Excel Certification.

A Marketing plan is a budget.

A Management plan is a budget.

An Accounting Finance plan is certainly a budget.

Get prepared for this now, not later when you wish you had paid attention in class.

    1. Master Investing

Everyone wants more wealth. Warren Buffet says he has s simple system. He obtains financial reports, and he reads them.   Understanding accounting reports will put you in the Buffet universe.     It is said that no one plans to fail, they just fail to plan . Don’t get caught short, start your investing education now.

CAT and NVDA announce lower earnings, DJIA drops 208 points.

    NVDA

Screen Shot 2019-01-29 at 4.55.01 AM

CAT is an industrial bell weather and NVDA is the same for semi onductor chip makers. Both toppe with the overall market Oct 3 and ave been in downtrends sine.

A9 and 13% drop yesterday is probably signalling bad news for the markets.  I m expecting a top in most indexes this week.

    Transports

The Transports are a more sensitive index to the economy than the Industrials. Take a look, what do you see?

Screen Shot 2019-01-29 at 4.58.29 AM

Transports peaked  in late Sept before the Industrials. Now TRAN is failing at its shortest moving average, the 50 day. The other MAs are converging which is usually a pre cursor to a change in trend.

Chainsaw Al Dunlap, famous for cost cutting, and then for other reasons, passed at age 81.

Dunlap claimed he had turned around and saved appliance maker Sunbeam.  Two years later the Board fired him and Sunbeam was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and then sold to another company.   Al over produced letting ending inventory grow and using GAAP, profits apparently increased.  And he engaged in channel stuffing and other activities. He ended up paying substantial fines, like $15 M.

But Florida State has named entire facilities for Al Dunlap as he has donated money to the school.

What do you think of that as an ethical proposition?  Would you name your campus facilities for someone who bankrupted a major company and then paid millions in fines?  What message does that ethically send to your students?  I am all for redemption in the religious sense but I never heard much redemption from Al, just an attempt to re make his image with generous donations. I mean really see excerpt below, the Dunlap Student Success Center??????????

Mr. Dunlap and his wife, Judy, became donors to FSU after he was invited to speak at its business school in the 1990s, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Funds donated by the couple have been used for such facilities as the Dunlap Student Success Center and the Albert J. Dunlap athletic training center.

An article in the WSJ suggests Tesla could learn from Apple.  Steve Jobs tried manufacturing only to close the plant. Now Apple outsources manufacturing to a third party.

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/tesla-should-pull-an-apple-leave-production-hell-to-other-people-11548435605

Why not do the same for Tesla?  Tesla has not met its goals for the lower priced model production. GM is closing its Ohio Cruze plant, Why not  unleash GM on the problem?

    Sounds reasonable to me!

I watched a Hillsdale College On Line free course over the break. It was Victor Davis Hanson on the Second Wo

Hillsdale offers a variety of free online classes.

    https://www.hillsdale.edu/academics/free-online-courses/

I very much enjoyed Hansons' take on WWII s it was from the point of view of strategy.

And I have red a good deal about the war and have viewed documentaries and Patton.

So I signed up for a course on Mark Twain.  And the second lecture discussed two of his short stories,

The Story of the Bad Little Boy

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County

the English Professor was reading from notes whereas Hanson apparently used a teleprompter allowing for better eye contact.

But it has been decades  since I read the Frog story and I had never read Bad Little Boy.

The Professor read excerpts and described the story but it was clear to me that to really follow there should have been a link to read the two stories on line first, so as to better follow the discussion.

The parallel struck me.   This is true of accounting or nay other topic.  If the student has not read the material, attempted the problem, there is little to be gained from the lecture. And certainly no serious question can be asked.

    So prepare prepare prepare

And in your spare time plan to view Hanson on WW II.
