A former Marfa Sheriff completed his 26 year jail stint.

He was found to possess over one tone of  93% pure cocaine in a horse trailer.  He and another fellow were to get the drugs to Houston or San Antonio for a Mexican cartel.

Such a large shipment indicated the Cartel had treat confidence in their ability, there is no other way the men would be trusted with some $50 M in drugs.

The so called War on Drugs has caught and corrupted many. It is amazing Rick Thompson managed such trafficking while a Sheriff dealing with other law enforcement officers.

Robotic technoloy is developing much faster than most of us realize.

Be sure to watch this video.  As an oil field veteran, I can see many uses for such robots in conditions too hazardous for humans.

Texas A&M University-San Antonio values the opinions and feedback of our students on the quality of instruction. The "Student Rating of Instruction" (SRI) system gives each student a brief survey for each course he or she is enrolled in at Texas A&M-San Antonio. This semester, we will be conducting the SRIs via an online platform. Paper and pencil evaluations will not be used.

In two weeks, on 4/23/2018 at 6:00am,  students will receive emails (Jaguar email accounts) with a hyperlink to the SRI for each class. In addition, they can find a link to their SRIs after they login to Blackboard (in the left-hand Tools menu on the My Institution landing page – NOT in your courses). Please note the following:

    • The evaluation can only be completed once for each class.
    • Evaluations are confidential, and faculty and administrators are unable to link student information with completed evaluations.
    • Surveys for Spring 2018 16-Weeks Term must be completed by 5/6/2018 at 5:00pm.
    • Faculty members will be able to access the results for review one week after final course grades are due (after final course grades have been posted).
    • While you will not be able to access results until one week after final course grades are due, you will be able to view your class response rates as soon as your students begin to respond. You can view this information by clicking on this link Login (Note: This link should not be shared with others; it is unique to you.)

A reader posted this comment in the WSJ reacting to an article on the Treasury Secretary  and Trup's tariffs

You should travel like me…enter the heart of China now…seeing 400M middle class is completed to build the largest economy scale of the world in the next 2-5 years…then you can start to joke around Donald Trump…this or that…The east tower of Guangzhou lease around 52 USD per square feet. The aver apartment sell for 1.5M dollar. With 200M apts were built and sold for this price….People here have more money to spend. China has 100 large cities with bullet train…2 hours, you go anywhere within 600 miles. BTW, check your bank now….may not enough with 10K…80% American do not have this cash…..but there are more than 300M people in China has more than 200K cash in the bank….and the Bank give them around 4-5% return by saving….with some CD or funds…What's your bank CD rate

I find his comment about 300 M having $200,000cash in the bank simply incredible, considering that most Americans still live paycheck to paycheck.

Parker Drilling PKD has violated NYSE listing requirements.

This is an instructive article. The New York Stock Exchange is the Big Board. Years ago the NASD was for small companies and the AMEX in between.

Tech stock like MSFT made the NASD an exchange of wealthy companies. Please read the listing requirement. Seems to me all PKD can do is initiate a reverse split,

meaning fewer shares out are worth more money.

State of The Donald Today. A front page article in the Wall Street Journal Thursday reports that Iowa has a state leading low unemployment rate, a mere 2.9%. The problem is that there are literally not enough workers to fill the positions available. Community college training centers lack individuals to train.

This is the result of massive cuts in business regulation. This is the result of cutting the corporate tax rate 40%. This is the result of making the USA more energy independent than it has ever been. ISIS is on the run in the Middle East. And the caravan from Central America is idling now in southern Mexico.

All these campaign promises have been kept. Nancy Pelosi   no longer mentions the ‘thousand dollar crumbs’ delivered in bonuses to workers. All of a sudden the worst bill passed in American history (the tax cut) is no longer mentioned. All the Democrats were AWOL on that legislation.

But a negative media never mentions the accomplishments. And in the Alabama Senate race, the Pennsylvania House race, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, Democrats turned out but Republicans did not. And with 36 Republicans not seeking re-election in the House, these become open seats. An open seat is much easier for a challenger than facing an incumbent. And frankly one has to wonder, would the Republicans secretly be glad to lose the House, blame it on Trump, and be done with him? And of course, handily blame it all on Trump tweets and bombastic comments.   A loss of the House will surely mean impeachment proceedings for whatever reason of the moment, and end the Trump Presidency. In a recent column I suggested The Donald listen to someone to whom he could not say, you’re fired. Donald, are you listening?

Donald’s approach to legislation and negotiation reminds me of Sam Nunn’s description of Barry Goldwater’s approach. Nunn described the approach as Ready, Fire, Aim! This art of the deal consists of outrageous, no way to compromise remarks, then a surprise reaction from the targets of this wrath, and then two weeks later, a complete softening of the position. Now we learn that most of the tariffs would not take hold for a couple of months, so let’s play nice and negotiate.

Just as Nancy stopped talking about $1,000 paycheck bonuses, Trump and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross are not asking if you have looked at your 401K lately.   No wonder, as the Dow reverberates 500 – 700 points either way on an intra-day basis. Donald, this is not winning friends and influencing people….

But the February low at 23,300 has held. The markets moved up nicely Wednesday and Thursday this week.   Boeing, Chevron, Caterpillar, and Nike snapped back. For the technically inclined, the Dow Industrials registered a buy signal on the daily point and figure chart.

And we are seeing some positive green shoots for the Permian Basin. The XLE Energy ETF bounced 1.8% today. Marathon MRO was up 5.73%.   Freeport McMoran FCX jumped 4.44% which is bullish for gold and copper. The SPX advanced 18.15 and a good close this Friday would be encouraging. Donald may pull this out yet.

My greatest concern has been the weakness in the energy service sector. The XES has traded just above its 2009 lows. Thursday it did advance 3.64%. It is below all four of the moving averages I follow. So a rally here would be most encouraging.

Finally I have suggestions for a possible ‘knock it out of the park’ rebound. Tanger Factory Outlets SKT is one of the top five tourist destinations in Texas. Located in San Marcos between Austin and San Antonio, it boasts dozens of ‘outlet stores.’ The parking lot is packed on the weekend with numerous Mexican license plates. SKT has fallen from $39 to $22.18. It pays a 6.29% dividend.

Floserve FLS has fallen from $77.50 to $44.81. The dividend is meager at 1.76% but it is a beaten down well –run company.

Apache APA has discovered the Comstock Lode of oil in the Davis Mountains. IT is making a higher low above $33 now at $38.75.

Put them on your radar screen.

Mark Goldman is CEO of MGR Accounting Reruiters.

Mark will be one of our guests on the panel May 5.  MGR typically places individuals with six or more years experience. Listen to the interview all the way to the end. Mark adds a comment about how important certification is later in one's career. He goes on to mention that the further out of school one is, the harder it is to pass the exam.

Mark will be a valuable resource for helping plan your accounting career. I look forward to his visiting our campus again.

Mark has his own podcast series titled Where Accountants Go in Texas. I was his second podcast!
