The Accounting Education Foundation of the Texas Society of CPAs is pleased to announce that we are accepting scholarship applications for the 2017-18 academic year. Last year, the foundation awarded 49 scholarships of $2,500 each to students intending to earn the CPA credential. This year the Foundation has budgeted 50 scholarships. Your school is allowed a maximum of six applications. We ask that you follow these steps in connection with this scholarship program:

Distribute the application link https://secure.tscpa.org/aef/aefnewapp.asp to the students eligible to receive the scholarship. The student must complete and submit the application online.

Upon receipt of a student’s application, a “TSPCA Official Scholarship Nomination Form” will be forwarded to the department chair. This form must be submitted for the student to be eligible for consideration.

Applicants must submit a current official transcript to: Accounting Education Foundation, 14651 Dallas Parkway, Suite 700, Dallas, Texas 75254-7408.
The selection committee will not consider an application unless an official transcript has been received. If the applicant has attended more than one university, the cumulative college transcript should show grades and credit received from all previous schools. If such transcript does not show a previous record, than a separate transcript (or transcripts) will be required.

Applicants must submit evidence that an Application of Intent to take the CPA Exam has been filed with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. The evidence should be sent to: Accounting Education Foundation, 14651 Dallas Parkway, Suite 700, Dallas, Texas 75254-7408.

The deadline for receiving applications and all supporting documents is September 30, 2017. Awards will be made during the fall semester and will be sent to the school for disbursement to the student.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

We appreciate your efforts in making this scholarship program a success and look forward to receiving applications from your students. Please contact Jeanne Miller at jmiller@tscpa.net if you have any questions on the application procedures.

This is an all day  8 00 Am  – 5 00 PM seminar. I estimate 200 working internal audit professionals will attend. So it will be a great networking opportunity as well.

The cost for student attendance is $35.  This would be a great way to learn more about internal auditing and fraud.

The President's Picnic is a bit of a misnomer.  It is actually more of a fair featuring both on campus and off campus organizations with a couple of slices of pizza thrown in for good measure. While sitting with good friend Jim Hackard, I met Madison Mauze, Senior VP for business Development for Ranger Health On Call.

Screen Shot 2017-08-30 at 1.39.55 PM

I am reaching ACCT 3301, managerial accounting for non accounting majors this semesters. One of my goals is to pepper the class with out of the box thinking, new approaches to business models. Ranger Health qualifies.

As the card says, House Calls are Back. Well read their own words.

Screen Shot 2017-08-30 at 1.46.20 PM

No doubt the idea is to partner with employer plans as well as make this available to individuals. The estimated individual house call is estimated at $95. That is about double a co pay for our University plan but if one had no plan, one could perhaps buy some real insurance. The Ranger house call would suffice for run of the mill problems.A catastrophic incident plan, allowing for unexpected expensive operations would be true insurance, which in fact is the idea of insurance.

Insurance of any kind was never supposed to pay for every 'repair' neither car nor home insurance works that way. And health insurance should be the same, the consumer needs to have some skin in the game. Ranger is San Antonio based, we will follow up in a few months and see how they are doing.

Here is an interesting story for wanna be entrepreneurs, and managerial accountants.

A couple wanted a portable  bar for their wedding reception.  Screen Shot 2017-08-30 at 9.58.12 AM

Not finding one available, they decided to build their own.

And it has developed into a business.

And, the good part is, they do not sell alcohol. The hosting party provides that, they just serve it.Hello Penny provides the trailer and the licensed bar tenders. I wonder what the licensing test for a bartender  asks????

    Learn more at the http://www.hellopennybar.com/

The one thing I could not learn, why is it called Hello Penny, no the bride's name is Gabby???

Michael Taylor analyzes the bai bond business.

As he says, it is highly leveraged a $100 K cash stake will allow  a million dollars worth of bail bonds to be written.

Any local jail cannot begin to hold everyone incarcerated for even a week's time. So the bail bond business is a necessity.

Judging who to bail however is surely quite a psychological challenge.

He points out that the bondsman is making 10% on his invested capital in a matter of weeks. That is a significant annual return.

In May we posted a detailed description of the visit Matt Lampert, Research Director and Alyssa Hayden, Executive Director, both of the Socionomics Institute, made at our Student Research Symposium.  View the visit at this link.

As I was assembling my syllabi for this fall, I had occasion to access the  University Catalog 2017-2018. Alyssa and Nicholas Forge,  one of my graduate students, is featured on the cover. Socionomics is alive and well at TAMUSA.

Ladies and Gentlemen, My name is Vaughn Caudill, Deputy Comptroller (CFO),
502 Comptroller Squadron, Joint Base San Antonio.  We are looking to hire
5-7 recent accounting/business graduates with a bachelor degree.  These are
Air Force Civil Service positions.  They are entry level governmental
accounting technician positions GS-0503-07.  We have a constant turnover of
our GS-07 positions.  Recently DoD received Direct Hire Authority for
Financial Management Experts.  What this means is the positions don't have
to be advertised.  When we find individuals that want to come work for the
government and meet the requirements for the position we submit the
paperwork to hire the individual.  We are looking for resumes to review and
call for interviews.  I'm coming to you as accounting professors for the
local universities asking your help letting your recent accounting graduates
    know of this opportunity.

    Benefits:
Pay for a GS-07 is $40,684.  What is the promotion potential?  After 12
    months as a GS-07 an individual is eligible for a GS-09 ($49,765), 12 months
    as a GS-09 eligible for GS-11 ($60,210), 12 months as a GS-11 eligible for a
GS-12 ($72,168).  Does everyone accomplish this – no.  Can it happen – yes.
Also, six digit salaries are possible.
Time Off: 10 holidays a year plus 13 days of annual leave (4 hours a pay
period) and the individual earns 4 hours a pay period of sick leave (13 days
a year). Pay period is 2 weeks so 26 pay periods in a year.
Insurance: Health, life, dental, eye, long-term care (employee share).

Please help us get the word out to your students about this great
opportunity working for the Air Force.  Resumes can be submitted to Carol
    Wood, CPA (carol.n.wood.civ@mail.mil) or myself
    (Vaughn.e.caudill.civ@mail.mil)
