Sears Holdings SHLD on Credit Watch

    October 5, 2016

    Wed Oct 5, 2016

Sears downgraded to near default by major rating agencies.

Edward Lampert was hailed as the next Warren Buffet when he bought K Mart out of bankruptcy.

He paid less than the real estate the stores were on for the land land and stored. Then he merged Sears into the firm to become SHLD.

The accolades now are gone. Six straight years of losses proves he is no retailer.

Let's use this article to help us understand more about the relation of the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statements.

SHLD is selling its most famous brands, Craftsman, Diehard, and Kenmore. My question, what is left?  While all brick and mortar stores struggle, this one seems next to go.

It is ironic that Sears would fall victim to on line shopping. After all Sears invented catalog shopping in the 15890s. Is buying on the internet really so different from buying out of a catalog?

Lampert's idea has been to buy back shares. Why does this help?  It decreases the denominator of the E/S ratio, so earnings appear higher though they are not, there are just fewer shares.

Here is a link to his last undated blog, apparently posted in 2014.

Read to see how incredibly naive he was then.

Here is a monthly chart detailing the entire rise and fall.

Lampert created SHLD when I began teaching here in 2003. Note the parabolic rise into 2007.

SHLD then collapsed along with everything else into 2009. The rebound stopped at  90. And it has been downhill ever since.

It is hard to see what he was optimistic about in 2014.

    Moody's downgrades SHLD.

Fitch's view in 2014 was that 2016 is about it.

In 2014 Fitch dropped SHLD below CCC.

Bob Greene reflects on how he met Arnold Palmer.

This is reflective of how Palmer realized this was a very young reporter just seeking a story.

Decades later, he casual welcome paid off in a fine eulogy on a great guy.

Before there was Clint Eastwood, There was Roger Corman

    October 3, 2016

    Monday Oct 3 2016

Roger Corman is the undisupted King of the Low Budgt B Movie

Yes he domninated the biker, horror, mood of the minute B genre. And one can see the earliest scenes of Jack Nicholson, Stallone, and others as their career were getting underway.

He was the first to go direct to video. And today he still churns out a movie a month on the razor thin budget of perhaps $5 M.

This is an interesting study in being ahead of the marketing curve as well as managerial accounting.

    The Culture Ate our Corporation

    October 3, 2016

    Monday Oct 3 2016

A former IBM CEO challeges the governance tactics of most corporations.

He makes the famous observation, you are not what you say

    you are what you do.

A company that trots out usual laundry list of corporate values and then follows with  a CFO memo calling for better numbers and no more new hires, is sending their

    real message to employees.

This is an interesting read regarding our continuing study of ethics.

Socionomics Lays Down the Beatles Tracks

    October 3, 2016

    Monday Oct 3 2016

Click here for a socionomic explanation of the Beatles rise to fame.

Socionomics hold that social mood is patterned in fractals based on the Fibonacci number sequence as to time and the Elliott Wave model as to advance and regression.

Here is a great example of both.

This is quite timely as Ron Howard has released Eight Days a Week, the Beatles Documentary. Screen Shot 2016-10-03 at 8.23.38 AM

We invite you to google the documentary for lots of comment.

Howard covers  1963 * 1966 in this one, so one can bet there is a sequel for covering say the album years from  1966-1970 when the band broke up.
