    Weekend Oct 2 2016

I just watched the movie The Shallows. Screen Shot 2016-10-02 at 8.19.23 AM

Incredibly it only earned a 6.5 at Imdb.com. I would rate it a 9.0, minimum.

The themes of the movie are

    Self Reliance

    Persistence

    Ingenuity

    Perseverance

    Resourcefulness

Actress Blake Lively carries virtualy the entire film by herself.

She has over a dozen film credits but this is the first time I have seen her. Believe me this is her break out movie.

    Parallel movies would include

The Edge – Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins survive a plane crash in the Alaska wilderness only to be pursued by a giant bear

Castaway – Tom Hanks survives a plane crash in the Pacific to be marooned on an island away from shipping lanes

All  is Lost -  Sailing solo around the world in a sailboat Robert Redford awakes to a cabin full of water after a rogue shipping container puts a hole the side of his boat

Endless Summer – Bruce Brown's 1966 documentary about two surfers scouring  the world to find the perfect wave

Alien and Aliens – another female, in this case, Sigourney Weaver, battles first one and then dozens of evil creatures in a pair of one of the best sci fi movies ever made

Outer space and the ocean are fair parallels, humans are pressed to survive in the vast expanse of either and danger is constant

    But the biggest parallel is

Jaws 1 – Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster  made his mark with  Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, and Robert  Shaw battling a great white shark

Numerous video clips are on the imdb.com site.

Decades ago when I was an undergrad we did not even have VCRs, yes hard to believe but true. As a result on a large campus like UT Austin, numerous groups would show films on the weekend. It made for an inexpensive date. Better yet, we experienced the movie as a group. And this resulted in the inevitable discussion  of the theme of the movie. That was a good thing and emblematic of what college was all about in the 'good ole days.' That experience does not exist on a  commuter campus. All I can do is urge you to watch it this next weekend.

    Why?

It is always difficult to find a movie that entertains the entire family. This one does.

Most parents of teenagers despair of getting them to do this or that. This movie is all about survival by self-reliance. Students have complained that my movie references need to be more current. This one was released this year,  2016.

The photography and effects are perhaps the best I have ever seen-simply stunning.

Blake's acting as she endures an open wound  made more painful by the salt water deserves an award nomination.

This is another example that a great movie need not have a huge budget. I remarked that the $100 M recent Ben Hur was a flop. I had rather bet on a $12 M Hell or High Water.

At $17 M this movie is of that genre. I found myself watching all of the credits to learn more about how it was created. There are dozens of digital special effects specialists listed.

The movie was not shot in Mexico which is suggested in the plot but Lord Howe Island.  Click this link for the official website and gorgeous shots of the place.

I had mentioned the movie The Karate Kid as inspirational to attending college or taking a certified exam. This film takes inspiration to the next level.

    So, there you have it.

I hope that some of you will watch this next weekend so we can have a discussion in class, you know, about self-reliance.

A run on a bank occurs when depositors fear they cannot recover their money.

In a frenzy many demand their deposits in full. Of course in a fractional banking system, most deposits are loaned out with perhaps less than 10% actually held in cash.

So a demand by 10% of the deposits for return of their money can collapse a bank.

Deutsche is now facing a $14 B fine from the US over its mortgage backed involvement. And there are rumors hedge funds are moving money out of the bank.

And so bank share prices are falling around the world.

Recall that Deutsche was involved with KPMG in the sale of tax shelters back in 1999. Perhaps we have a tone at the top problem here.

As I said in an earlier post, losing something you never had is really not much of a penalty.

Another professor in this article makes the same observation.

It is not like Stumpf had to write a check for $41 M or Tolstead for $19 M. A Restricted Stock Unit is a grant of stock that vests after a period of time. Losing the RSU means you will not ereive it.

And it is not like WFC is out any cash, as this is not a cash transaction.

AND none of the customers get any of the $60 M.

So, uh er ah, is this justice?

In addition to familiarizing your self with Sherlock Holmes powers of observation and deduction, I suggest you buy

and read and re read How to Win Friends and influence People. Screen Shot 2016-09-29 at 12.49.15 PM

Or I can summarize in Dale's own words the theme of the book.

    Quote

You will make more friends in two months showing an interest in other people than you will in two years trying to get others interested in you.

    No kidding.

Why is Facebook so successful?  Because it offers everyone the chance to edit a magazine about their favorite person-themselves. It is as if everyone suddenly had the ability to edit their own personal version of O Magazine. HInt, who is on the cover of O magazine every month?  Hmmm

I see there are newer  editions like how to influence people in the digital age. Well the medium may have changed but the message remains the same.

Show an interest in others and they will think you are a fascinating person.

Have you read at least one Sherlock Holmes short story?

Screen Shot 2016-09-29 at 12.04.12 PM

I believe there is a great deal to be learned by studying the practices and methods of the famous detective.

Arthur Conan Doyle published the stories from  10891-1927.  He even killed off the detective only to have readers clamor for more stories, so he came back from the dead!

Unlike the fiction novels and so many movies today the stories were written at the end of the Victorian era. Hence little to no violence, at least involving Holmes. And there were certainly no racy scenes or vulgar language.  The violence is more likely to have occurred during the crime he is investigating.

Instead the appeal of the story was Holmes' investigative technique of deductive reasoning and observation. At the time deductive reasoning was being adopted by Scotland Yard, the British equivalent of our FBI. Holmes companion, Dr. Watson, plays the role of every man, continually protesting that there is no way Holmes can defend leaping to yet another uncanny observation, yet he does.

The character has proven so popular that a stage play began as Doyle write the stories. Since then numerous motion pictures have been made but please do not take the current one with Robert Downey Jr.  kung fu  kicking his way to a solution as even remotely representing the stories. In addition modern writers have been hired to create new adventures for the detective, who still operates in his original era.

Now, auditors should exhibit professional skepticism. We gather evidence to support conclusions, A walk through at the client's place of business is standard practice. What will the auditor notice during the walk through?  Details can provide lots of clues as to what might be happening.

Consider the Rita Crundwell case.  Anyone who knows anything about the horse business should have immediately suspected a fraud by Rita. Consider this view of her 'trophy room.

Screen Shot 2016-09-29 at 12.38.29 PM

As we say on the south side, No Way Jose!

There is no way the horse business itself would support that level of success!  As one studies audit crack ups, it is always apparent the auditors were NOT doing their job, not paying attention. Indeed in his book Cleaning Up, Barry Minkow (in jail again as I write) is highly critical of auditors just walking around checking off boxes on a numbered list.

Yet no one questioned HOW SHE DID IT.  In a way this is a parallel of Bernie Madoff, how was he supposedly producing such fab results, answer, he lied.

So click here of a collection of Holmes Stories.

I suggest you read at least one if you have not enjoyed time with Sherlock.

AND the powers of observation can be extremely useful in an interview. One professional with ATT told me he made his decision about whether to pursue an applicant in the first five minutes. So what can you observe about the person interviewing you that might cause he or she to linger longer with you!   The powers of observation are invaluable in such a situation.

And I suggest you arm yourself with another important resource. It is so important I will make a separate post, nothing like a serial eh, for it. Go to the next post.

Weatherford, an energy service firm, has been fined $140 M for over stating earnings.

Officials in charge at the time are now gone.

In  2013 Weatherford paid some $250M for charges that it had violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

We study ethics in all our accounting classes. Here is a clear failure of establishing the proper Tone at the Top.

Notably the firm is getting higher marks for the current CFO.

We study revenue recognition in Chapter Five of our Spiceland  Text. The point here is that the failure to follow the rules can have very real consequences.

Renita Eizaldae comments on the Wednesday Sept 21, 2016 event.

The Member Appreciation Seminar- Linguistic Lie Detection: Words Never Lie but People Do was the second event with the San Antonio chapter of the IIA that I have attended as a student. The event was loaded with information. My understanding of both lie detection and the profession of internal auditing grew by leaps and bounds over the course of the day.

I learned lie detection can be broken down into two parts: gathering information and statement analysis. In regards to gathering information presenter Nejolla Korris’ statement, “We cannot define whether someone is telling the truth or not by our own logic.” has resonated with me. As an auditor I will need to remember that my definitions may not be the same definitions as the person I am interviewing. In statement analysis a key point to remember as an auditor is that “a change in language signals a change in reality”. Changes in tense, pronoun, and time should be viewed as major red flags.

The information shared by my tablemates was invaluable. This time around I had the pleasure of sitting with four HEB internal auditors and two internal auditors from VIA. HEB is currently one of my favorite companies and I was ecstatic with my stroke of luck. I spent the lunch break asking questions such as, “how did you chose internal auditing as a specialty in accounting?” and “have you identified practices within your company that could be changed to benefit the company?”. I was in the presence of CPA’s, CIA’s, CGAP’s, and a CISA; everyone was gracious and shared their reasons and experiences in both education and in the profession.

Overall the time and dollars used to attend the seminar were well spent. I picked up new skills in lie detection and learned about the internal auditing profession in a way I haven’t in class. I made sure to bring my business cards as encouraged by Dr. Elam. I couldn’t help saying “you get a card, you get a card, everybody gets a card” as I handed them out to my tablemates. I felt like Sherlock Holmes and Oprah Winfrey within the span of a few hours and I left the seminar feeling excited about my future in accounting.
