First Annual Student Research Symposium at Texas A&M University–San Antonio

    Call for Proposals

    Refer to Attachments

We are now accepting proposals for our First Annual Student Research Symposium at Texas A&M University–San Antonio. This new symposium has been created to provide students with the opportunity to present their research to the wider campus community. We hope to have students from every college participate. The symposium will be held on April 17th and 18th in the new University Central Academic Building and is open to students, faculty, their family members and the wider San Antonio community.

Given the symposium’s interdisciplinary scope, we are accepting a variety of proposals this year. Individual students may submit a poster presentation or an oral presentation, and groups of students may propose a fully formed roundtable or interactive poster sessions. Regardless of the type of submission, participants must provide a title for their submissions and be able to provide the names and contact information (i.e., email addresses) for all presenters and a faculty advisor. Submissions should include a full abstract (no more than 250 words) that summarizes the project as well as a more concise press paragraph (no more than 100 word) which will be printed in the conference program. The abstracts will be reviewed by conference organizers who will decide whether the submission is appropriate for the conference.

To propose a session, please visit http://www.tamusa.edu/provost/SRS

    Types of Presentations

    Posters

Poster sessions will be held throughout the conference. Poster sessions allow participants to present individual papers with key excerpts from the papers displayed on large boards. The audience circulates among posters and stops to discuss papers of particular interest with the authors. Authors should be present with their posters in order to answer questions and describe their research to interested audience members, but the authors will not make a formal speech or presentation. The conference will assist in printing costs for the posters.

    Interactive Poster Session

In an interactive poster session, a group of three to five students with related topics would propose a session in which presenters introduce their posters to a small audience and answer questions from the audience. Each presenter will introduce their poster briefly and then the audience members will ask questions about the content of each poster.

    Oral Presentation

In an oral presentation, students will present a 15 minute talk on a topic of interest to an audience. Conference organizers will group talks on similar topics together into hour-long session in which several student speakers will present their research. Students may use technology such as PowerPoint if they wish but are not obligated to do so (please indicate whether you will need such technology on your submission).  Students will speak for the allotted time and take questions from audience members once the talk has concluded. If desired, several students may co-host a talk together.

    Roundtable Session

In a roundtable session, a group of three to five panelists would prepare short remarks on a given topic of interest, while a moderator would prepare questions to ask the panelists. The session should generate spontaneous interaction among panelists and between panelists and the audience.  Diversity among panelists is important to the success of the session. Further, all panelists must recognize the need for advance preparation. A roundtable proposal should describe the topic that will be addressed by the panel as well as central themes and potential questions; identify the format of the session; and name a student or faculty moderator as well as student panelists.

NBC maintains its lead without Brian Williams.   Lester Holt has replaced him with a quiet no nonsense style that seems to resonate with viewers.

I am guessing Brian Willilams will be lucky to come back as a special projects guy.If ratings stay high NBC will likely hope viewers forget Brian.

The move to audit the FED seems to be going nowhere. In the meantime

how about a complete audit of Trump Inc.  The casinos in New Jersey are about to file for Chapter 11. A few years back some other Trump casinos, maybe these I don't remember, took the big BK.

But as always, the Donald is adept at leaving investors holding an empty sack while he stays above the fray.

Is Trump really solvent himself, of just a master of juggling so many debt balls in the air, keeping his bankers too fearful to ask the real question, is there real cash flow in the Trump Empire?

In his last comment alert TAMUSA student Ed Rios wonders about stock buy backs and how they artificially inflate a company earnings. In fact one of my graduate research teams is tackling just that topic. More to follow.

Harry Truman is the one ex President admired by both parties. Here is a summary of his life after the Presidency.

After retiring from the presidency, Truman returned to Independence, Missouri, where he wrote his memoirs, oversaw the construction of his presidential library and took long walks. He died on December 26, 1972, and is buried next to Bess in the courtyard of the Truman Library.

Now compare that with the Clinton Foundation.

At the same time, those companies were among the many that gave to the Clinton family's global foundation set up by her husband, former President Bill Clinton. At least 60 companies that lobbied the State Department during her tenure donated a total of more than $26 million to the Clinton Foundation, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of public and foundation disclosures.

Even Democrats are questioning the ethics of such blatant fund raising.

There is nothing new in all this, various Presidents since Truman have capitalized on their office by giving speeches and such but the Clintons have taken this to a new plateau. The Bushes are famous for using family ties to 'participate in business.' Bush H friends bought his son a baseball team to burnish his image as a business man after he failed in the oil business of West Texas for example.

But the point here is that Truman went out of his way to avoid profiting from what he clearly thought was an ethical conflict.  The Clintons on the other hand have milked  the cow for every dime they can find, even while HiIllary served as Secretary of State. By the way No Secretary of Defense since the 1960s has failed to become a millionaire after leaving office. Al Haig spun the revolving door between NATO,  e Henry Kissingger, George Shultz, Madeline Allbright, and on it goes.United Technologies, and becoming Secretary of State.

We had a lively discussion on Brian Williams in the Ethcis class last week. What do you think of the Washington revolving door that allows so many in 'public service' to do so well upon leaving office?

See Henry Kissinger, George Shulz, Madeleine Albright, and on it goes

The FASB and IFRS have agreed on the need for clarification  regarding revenue recognition standards.

As we have noted the only constant in accounting regs is change.

The Jackie Robinson team has been stripped of its national title. National Little League determined recruiting violations.  The kids are big losers here. Another ethical loss for Chicago.

Lance Armstrong's new career as a full time defendant has begun. I commented to the ethics class last year that I suspected he would b come  a full time defendant, looks like that has begun. Like the tobacco cases, once the prosecution finally won a case, the gates were open for many to follow.
