    Social Mood

We have been writing for some time  about a downturn in social mood. That downturn is now on display world wide. From massive demonstrations in Caracas, Venezuela to protests in Cuba to the unrest across North Africa to the refugee campus in Lebanon and Jordan to the take over in Crimea and now potentially the Ukraine, we can add, yes the US.

The Federal Government in the US has a horrible track record of violence against citizens when push literally comes to shove.

Kent State Shootings 1970 Ohio National Guard

Ruby Ridge 1992 USMS and FBI

    Waco Siege 1993 ATF, FBI

And then there are the failures to connect the dots

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trade_Center_bombing 1993

9/11 2001 A total failure from the National Security Advisor on down

In an election year it dawned on someone in Washington DC to stop what might have been the US Tunisia moment ( a Tunisia street merchant set himself of fire literally igniting hte revolts across North Africa).

Protestors Block I 15, Government Backs Down Please read this article to get a real hand on the social mood pulse. I just read a liberal columnist dismiss the Secede bumper stickers, he or she is clearly not paying attention. This confrontation in Nevada began with the FEDS armed with Tasers, it ended with

both sides brandishing weapons. Consider this quote from the article. Screenshot 2014-04-13 08.26.14

We the people in this area have nothing to fear,” said Bundy, wearing a cowboy hat and a T-shirt bearing his family name. “We can carry our weapons if we like because we have Second Amendment rights, and those are God-given rights. Those Second Amendment rights are our rights. But, and I say ‘but,’ because we don’t have to carry them right now because we’re afraid. I’m telling you that right now. Because there’s been a lot of people who’ve been afraid, and I know that feeling. Just yesterday evening I was really afraid. … Today, we have been confirmed by our creator that we do not have to be afraid.

Remember the campaign comment about guns and bibles?  Well here we are…

The 1966 – 1982 era finally, jmake that quickly by  1968,  witnessed the US Capitol ringed with Marines and Machine Guns .

I bring all this up not to be on one side of the political spectrum or the other, just to re count what did and could happen in a period of negative social mood.

And now on a different note, a sure sign of the coming top of a market occurs when dentists get involved. And so we have

If you don't have an oil well

    get one

You'll love doing business with The Western Company

The end of any mania is concurrent with the entry of amateurs entering the field. In the 1970s marginal tax rates beyond 50% resulted in all manner of 'tax shelters.'  They worked by offering a huge write off that would off set or reduce ordinary income. This is the source of my comment about dentists and other high ordinary income individuals. The tax shelter always offers some sort of write off like accelerated depreciation This is why the Tax Act of 1986 created a new no you can't and don't you dare set of depreciation tables. That act put the wooden stake thru the heart of tax shelters.

But like Freddy Kreuger, they are back. With Federal Rates at 39% and state and municipal rates, think CA and NY, pushing total taxes over 50%, the lure of write offs comes again.

The idea of a tax shelter ias that one receives an ordinary write off in the beginning for a fixed sum of money. Then the money should be recovered through lease payments or an eventual sale of the capital asset at, you guessed it, a higher price.

An oil deal works like this As they ad says, you get to deduct 85% of Intangible Drilling Costs IDC. Trust me they will find a way to spend the other 15% of your money. You now have your write off. Hopefully when the well comes in, you will experience years of fat pay checks, again somewhat offset by operating expenses. There may or may not be fat paychecks but I can promise you, there will be operating expenses.  Additional promises are usually made that one will eventually sell the asset bet it a

    railroad car

shrimp farm in Hawaii (really such things were created)

    jet airliner

    real estate

or in this case oil well

and experience a capital gain at lower tax rates. Get it, an oridnary write off up front in exchange for cash payments and an eventual capital gain.

Except I never saw a tax shelter that resulted in anyone making a gain.

But again, all the social mood extremes of the last era of 1966-1982 are coming back again.

Well darned we missed the top 25 again.  But I mean College Station came in at 37 and Rice at 33 so this is pretty heady stuff.

Scanning the list you will note many of the 'top' schools were started pre 1800. One thing to remember is that the 'top' schools never go away, one hundred years from now Harvard and Dartmouth will likely still be up there. These schools are more a fraternity than a university. All the members of the Supreme Court are from Ivy League Colleges for example. Remember the outcry when Bush nominated someone from, oh horrors, SMU?

The question is rather, is you school a good choice for you?  I suspect TAMUSA is a good choice for most of our commuter students with easy parking and accessible professors. And frankly if you are going to work in San Antonio I don't think Harvard is such a great choice, a better choice is  a school knoown in San Antonio, and the A & M brand id certainly known.

Bill Gross is apparently still smarting over the exit of El Erian.  El Erian was everywhere in the media while he was at PIMCO, the largest bond fund manager founded by Gross in 1971. while El Erian was the heir apparent, he bowed out saying someone else needed to lead. That left Gross, age 69, with a bit of egg on his face.

My expereince is that while such guys who start something, say they will retire, like a Supreme Court Justice, they are more likely to leave in a hsopital bed or simply toes up. And that is what happened here. El Erian sensed Gross would never leave, thnk Gates and Ballmer at MSFT, and so he left instead.

Remember this incident if you are ever intrigued by the promise that yes

one day all this will be yours.

Kirk Tuck usually has a reflection worth reading. This one is not exception. Or as Apple might put it,

    Think Different.

Reflecting back over my life I am reminded of a Gail Sheehy comment.

Poor People think about Tuesday all day Tuesday. Rich People think in terms of decades.

Where do you want to be in ten years. What would help you get there.

Answer, plan to conquer a certified exam now. Use all the resources you have here, like the professors and the library and the free use of review texts.

Everyone else is 'gonna get around to studying for such exams later.'

Just two weeks ago the Dad of one of or our grads updated me on his son's progress on the CPA exam. He had missed passing all four parts in 18 months, so he had to start all over. He has two parts passed now. He is, my estimate, probably three or four years out of school That is the hard way. Mine is the easy way, it might not seem easy, but it is easier than waiting until you are all alone and working and without the support net of multiple professors, other students, and review material.

    Oh well…..

We are studying the equity section of the balance sheet in a couple of the intermediate classes. We received an excellent question from an alert accouting student today. Here is the quesion.

Is there a common process to evluate a stock's potential as to possible upside or downside in price, at least that is the gist of the question a I understood it.

An overview of security analysis is here.

Indeed there is. The two camps of analysis break down into

Fundamental Analysis this has to do with the financial performance of the company. A macro analysis would start with the overall economy and then drill down to the industry, and the specific competitors in the industry and then to the one company. What is the business strategy, how experienced is management, how leveraged is the company, as Buffet might ask, is there a moat around the company insulating it from competition, and dozens of other similar questions.

Technical Analysis is explored in this article.  The idea is that all the information about a stock is contained in the price and volume action of the stock.  Investors apply that information to make decisions every day as ot wehtherto buy or sell.

Intermarket analysis looks at stocks, bonds, the Dollar and commodities. Additionally closely related markets like lumber and stock prices of home builders might be examined.

And of course there is social mood. That can drive stocks with no earnings like Tesla or a limited history like Facebook to very high prices.

A complete discussion is clearly beyond a blog post but there is plenty of information at the links I posted.

Yep Netflix opens up lots of 'free movies' to view. The problem is figuring out which ones are worth your time. I have found a few of note and am passing them on for what it is worth.

The only French Movie I ever Understood was

Finally after a multi-decade wait, I found another one. The Prey is an awkward title but a great movie. If you were a fan of The Fugitive or U S Marshall, this is pretty much the same plot. IN this one Alice Taglioni plays the Detective. And yes it is in subtitles which takes away nothing from the film.

Everyone wants to win the  lottery but lots of lottery winners have sad stories on the eventual outcome. The same is true for our next two similarly themed films. Route 9 features a couple of hapless county deputy sheriffs out looking for a stray dog when they happen on a drug bust gone bad, with a handy bag of money. Keep the money, lay low, and look forward to good times, right, what could go wrong?  And like The Prey, we have a sharp female detective played by always intriguing Roma Mafrfia.

A similar plot is at the heart of A Simple Plan.  I am puzzled by the much higher rating for Plan over Route 9 the latter is easily as well written. Both films focus on ethical behavior by the way. In this one the locals happen on a crashed plane, yep, carrying a bag of money, what could go wrong, it's a simple plan, right?

A Fork in the Road like The Prey features an escaped convict. But this one despite the murders is played for laughs. I suspect it earns the low rating due to 15 minutes in the very middle of the film which should have been edited out. The characters are just doing nothing, you will see what I mean. But once it gets going again, the fun begins.

The Way Back released in 2010 is not a comedy. For those of you with complaining teenagers, or anyone else you meet who is complaining about life, here is a reality check. A handful of prisoners escape a WW II Soviet Gulag, later joined by a young gir. Now all they have to do is trek acorss the Gobi Desert to Freedom. And then across the Himalyas, based on a  true story.

If you have not seen a live version of the Tuna Series, the movie version of Sordid Lives is pretty close. The story takes place in 24 hours in Snyder, Texas after Mom's death. As the relatives gather we learn more and more about the family secrets which leads to one hilariopus encounter after another. Delta Burke, Olivia Newton John in a surprise role, Bonnie Bedelia (who has never quite achieved the fame she deserves) and Beau Bridges. The scene  between Bubba Owens and the government female shrink at the Big Springs Hospital where Bubba has been doing Tammy Wynette impressions for the patients and the shrink is trying to get on Oprah is not to be missed.

Greater Tuna is not free on Netflix. But it is the cinema version of the long running Austin play about the third smallest town in Texas Two guys play all the roles leading to =equels Red White and Blue Tuna (Fourth of July) and Tuna Christmas. You have to have lived in small town Texas to reall appreciate the humor but any native Texan will recognize folks we know and love. Look for live performances during holidays in Austin, TX.

We professors are constantly peppered with questions about a student's grade. This is not surprising given the years and years of emphasis on just that. As a result, students have a hard time shifting hgars when the time comes. And by that I mean shifting gears to the only grade that really counts. That grade is a pass fail on whether you become certified in a particular accounting field.

Today an accounting degree at the BBA or Masters level is your ticket to take such an exam.

Yet time after time when I ask, students reply as one did just today in an e mail, oh I am going to study for the CPA or whatever after I graduate.  To which I can only wonder, what not now?

Scan the accounting certifications on the sidebar of this blog. You will note there are quite a few but the big ones are CPA, CIA, CMA, CFE. The time to begin studying is now, integrate this with your current studies. The review texts have handy outlines over the very material you are now studying. And there are questions with solved answers. My friends at Gleim have provided sets of their review books available on reserve in our Business Library at Brooks.

And handily we have a full time staff of professors to help

    REG

Gil Barrera is both a CPA and an Attorney, so he can help with Law and Tax. Richard Green is also pretty handy at tax.

    Audit

Both Leticia Price and Judy Lewis focus on audit.

    FAR

Between Nancy Batch, Amanda Salinas, and myself if we don't know the answer we will find it out for you.

    BEC

Judy Lewis and I have taught managerial and we have a couple of economists here to also help with economic concepts.

My point is that waiting until after you graduate is waiting until you do not have the advantages of the in house professor AND our business library with its 300+ accounting journals.

    Start now, do not delay.
