Screen Shot 2013-08-16 at 4.05.26 PMWe are a Texas based professional services firm providing advisory, consulting, interim, and executive search solutions in the areas of Accounting & Finance, Risk & Compliance, Business & Technology, and CFO Services.

Commitment to our core values of Exceptional Value and Servant Leadership shape who we are.

    Aventine Hill Statement of Commitment

Aventine Hill is one of the seven hills on which Ancient Rome was built.

We are committed to listening and understanding our Client’s needs and delivering results that meet those needs. Our actions are true to our promise of Uncompromising Quality in everything we do.

I sat down with Beth Hair, CEO of Aventine Hill Partners, Inc. this Friday afternoon. She juggles her time between branches in Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. Founded at the depths of the financial recession in April 2009, the firm has grown to three branches and single digit millions of gross revenue. Gee how'd she do that?

This is a story that should be of interest to all our students.

Beth Hair graduated with an accounting degree from UT Austin in 1984. She subsequently became a Texas CPA. (Professor Elam has all three of his degrees from UT Austin.) Beth worked for corporations in Dallas, and Houston. She found herself drawn to the idea of recruiting and personnel services. But that seemed too much by the transaction without a longer term focus.

IN 1999 Beth moved to San Antonio. She worked for Resource Global Professionals and  Accretive Solutions. These firms perform third party accounting work (see commitment statement above) as Aventine does today.

By 2009 she found herself in Houston. A firm was in need of some accounting assistance. As she tells it, the job only grossed just over $10,000. But all journeys start with a single step. Argentine Hill had its first success.

Beth notes that Sarbanes Oxley SARBOX helped comp;anies like Aventine Hill  a lot. Traditional large accounting firms had to shed their advisory services. And they were forbidden to do the accounting work they audited, so good-bye to internal audit work for the Big Four.

This was a niche that launched Aventine. Beth realized that firms needed experienced financial professionals. With more and more employee requirements, and hte reduction of headcount in accounting deparments in 2009/2010 more and more firms became reluctant to have any excess employees on hand for special projects.  Outsourcing to a firm with experienced personnel in compliance made more sense than inventing the wheel themselves.

IN a surprise move in  2012, Beth was offered the chance to buy Accretive Solutions in San Antonio. She purchased it, increased the size virtually doubling in a few months,  and managed to retire the purchase price within a few months. Today the firm is debt free, only borrowing to meet expanded payroll requirements.

Again and again in our conversation, Beth stressed the importance of long term planning and outlook. She also was clearly concerned in finding the right  job for her employees and contacts. She noted that Aventine's business model, culture, and goals work together to differentiate the firm. Aventine is neither a temporary agency nor a CPA firm.

In describing the niche that Aventine fills, Beth told me Aventine's bill rates are more than a  temporary agency would charge. But a typical large accounting firm would charge but are about half in many cases those of a a large consulting firm.

I was left with the sense that Beth has a clear notion of what she wants to do. She remarked on what the firm might  be in ten years, again reflecting her long term view of what she is doing.

Perhaps the most insightful moment came when I expressed admiration for her accomplishments. She was quck to point out that Aventine has been a team not an 'I' effort. To wit – in her own words  she credits the team as follows.

For example, without Scott Dickinson, our COO, I don't know that we would
have even received the opportunity to buy Accretive's SA office.  Also,
Walter Belt played a huge role in the analysis and decision to make the
acquisition–there were many conversations where we benefitted greatly
from Walter's counsel and the questions he raised that were important to
address.  Scott, Walter, Nick Tummers, Roxanne Morris, Brenda Zabojnik and
myself worked as a team to integrate the acquisition.  Communication,
change management, process integration and extreme people care were
critical.  Everyone worked intense long hours for 6 months nonstop.  The
commitment to succeed and welcome our new consultants and other key
employees was amazing.  It simply would not have happened without each
person acting as a leader and contributing their individual talents.
Also, once the acquisition was announced, there were several legacy
Accretive employees who stepped up as leaders and were hugely important to
our success during a challenging period.

And today, there are many on our team who are proven business leaders,
thought leaders, analysts and problem solvers.  I rely heavily on the team
(our CFO Partners are incredible).  The ability of any of us to pick up
the phone or walk down the hall and ask for input and advice from others
on our team makes Aventine successful.  It's a huge differentiator for us
that is somewhat hidden, but obvious that when you have a great team, then
the organization stands a better opportunity to succeed and hopefully
become an industry leader. In conclusion, I asked if she thought the Texas location had aided the growth of the firm. I received an enthusiastic yes. We both agreed that the success triangle of DFW, Houston, and San Antonio-Austin was a success story that wold be tough to replicate anywhere else

This fall we will host Aventine Hill employee Heidi Harrington to speak with our students. Thanks to Beth for this insight which should serve our students well.

    Sept 9 2013

Last October 30, 2013 I began a list of Who's the Worst in anticipation of teaching Ethics in the spring. Today's news suggests it is time to begin again. It will be hard to top the story of Rita Crundwell.  Ah, she is back in the news, I googled for a link and by golly, Rita has appealed her 20 yar sentence. After stealing some $54 Million from the residents of Dixon, IL, Rita now denies that they were victims, just parties of interest. Well nothing like a rationalization once you are behind bars.  We will put Rita back on the list as we learn what the prosecutors will say to this novel appeal.

But already we have some candidates whose names we have seen before. As I learned last year I need to allow for multiple categories so here goes.

    Idols with Clay Feet

Michael Dell  was hailed as the smartest guy in Austin, or at least Round Rock, just ten years ago. Who could go wrong buying Dell Stock a realtor asked me at the time?  Today Mike is scrambling to stay in charge of his own company. He bumped the bid to go private a dime to $13.75 plus a 13 cent dividend to exiting shareholders. The ethical question here is, should Mike get to stay on after failing to deliver value for shareholders?  He gets to vote all his shares which of course he got for free anyway, gee is that ethical?

Dr. Kern Wildenthal  Past President of the UT Soutwhest Medical School in Dallas, resigned his positon in late 2012. He had worked there for 42 years, 22 as President. The endowment grew by $1 billion while he was president. Yet in appropriate billings for travel brought him down. This resulted in a $140,000 audit by Grant Thornton. I leanred of this at a presentatino by UTSA auditors at the August SA IIA meeting. For example, he claimed he had visited a hospital in New Zealand on a trip. Yet a call to the hospital revealed he had not done so. No doubt he was well compensated, I would guess that job paid several hundred thousand by year 2000. Yet he frittered away his steallar career for a few trips.

Tobin Smith canned at Fox Business. Tobin in paid to tout stocks and does so in his business. While he did not mention this firm on the air, viewers bought and complained. Tobin failed the smell test and is out.

    Business Gone Rogue

Just Plain Mean – Two Hispanic women were indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud. Yolanda Hernandez de Arteaga and Maria de Lourdes Montano Vicencio coaxed immigrants in  La Vernia to pay them for legal immigration status. They received over $100,000. When no documents were forthcoming they threatened to turn their victims in for deportation. This is particularly sad as the Hispanic immigrants naturally trusted other Hispanics which of course is how the women pulled off the scheme.

Raul Weil has agreed to extradition to the USA. Raul has been on the lam with US authorities wanting him for helping tax evaders via the familiar Swiss Bank Account. Raul was a high up with UBS.

Well it's All in the Family. Jesse Jackson Jr starts a 30 month jail term for mis use of his campaign funds. Wife Sandi gets 12 months for fraudulent tax return filing.

    Politicans Gone Wild

Joe Santiago, a former Democrat State Representative,  got four years to do in his part of the bribery ring of State District Judge Abel Limas. We mentioned this case last year. One lawyer who plead guilty and was facing a similar four years or so, took his life by diving off a bridge.

Kathleen Parker has Anthony Weiner defining deviancy down.  As Kathleen points out, we are somehow letting people off the hook for exposing themselves on the internet as opposed to doing the same n a public park. This has led to some truly creative headlines on the part of Drudge.  will he stay in the race, will he become the next Mayor of New York City, the primary is Sept 10, all the more reason to start our list now.

Eliot Spitzer was Attorney General and then Governor of New York State.  He resigned in 2008 amid evidence he was involved in a prostitution ring, which as Heidi Fleiss can attest is actually illegal in this country. Spitzer is back, now running for New York Controller, is dodging questions about a girl friend. His wife is not on the campaign trail. Hey folks, guys like this are the gift that keep on giving for an Ethics Teacher.

We don't really mean to be salacious on this blog, perhaps this political section needs at least an R Rating, but honeslty we just report, you decide. San Diego Mayor Bob Filner begins a two week therapy session for, well you read the story, but once again conduct unbecoming to women. Will 70 year old Filner become cured in two weeks?  We'll be on the story!

August 2013, sure enough after 18 women accused Filner of improper behavior, he has agreed to step down August 30.

Jorge Juan Torres Lopez, former Governor of Coahulla, and his Finance Minister have been indicted. They are charged with embezzling $250 Million from Mexico and money laundering via JP Morgan Chase. They are fugitives as I write today  which is Thanksgiving. There is a lot of tough talk about  how the IRS finds their man. Gee I would think a hefty  bounty would bring some fast results.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford will not resign despite a video of him smoking crack cocaine. I assume  this habit is illegal in Canada but this speaks to the larger issue of appropriate behavior.

Florida R Congressman Henry Radel pleads guilty to buying cocaine, at duPont Circle Washington DC no less. Forida Republicans call for his resignation, he plans none. He got a year's probabtion.

John Beale told the EPA he was CIA, missing months of work and embezzling $900,000. Here is more detail of his long term con job on the EPA.  He plead guilty and then took the fifth infront of Congress. And he will get his government pension.  Where was the GAO, the internal auditors? THis is a good example of why internal auditors need to perform payroll audits to insure people show up for work, that there no ghost employees, and that internal controls are working. As one Congressman opined, what does it take to get fired at the EPA?

Silvio Berlusconi finally gets the boot out of the Italian Senate. Why do you ask? Silvio and 'bunga bunga parties.' And then there was the conviction for tax fraud. As the first article says, this 20 year spree is at an end. But then taxes tend to be so high in Italy and a few other notables like Sophia Loren have run afoul of authorities.

    Sports Figures

Major League Baseball dumps players  for using performance enhancing drugs. A Rod  sells Miami Home for $30 million.

NCAA investigates Johnny Manziel  for allegedly taking money for autographs. Actions have consequences. Now A & M has to make some decisions.  If they play JM and he is found guilty, they forfeit any games won when he plays. But the star quarterback led the team to last year's 11-2 outcome, so benching him means re making the team strategy.

Lance Armstrong sued the London Sunday Times and won 300,000 pounds over an article which claimed he used performance enhancing drugs. Once he admitted this last year that he had, the paper wanted both the 300,000 plus their 720,000 pounds in court costs. Lance has now settled with the paper. I expect most of his future will be consumed as a legal defendant.

    Accountants

DeLoitte fined $22 M for advice to MG Rover. The oversight group in England has been criticzed for being soft on accountants. the largest previous fine was a mere $1.4 M. I'd say they are getting serious.

Former KPMG Partner Scott London pleads guilty to passing insider trading information. What makes this case most interesting is that London traded the information for apparently well less than $100,000 cash and a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona watch. As the Los Angeles Audit Partner he surely drew a salary of over $400,000 plus bonus. KPMG had to withdraw as the auditor for two of the clients invoved.

Book mark this page, it is bound to grow in the coming months!

    Friday Sept 6 2013

After a week of working out the bugs, I have posted the first you tube narrated problem solution. Here is the link

While I left some of the gaffs in, I hope to improve the production values as I go. It is clear one needs to think ahead. While it is easy to swipeout the wrong number on the whiteboard in front of the class, it is more obvious one has made a mistake in video.

At any rate, I hope to offer you tube solutions of problems probably the brief exercises for each chapter in both 3311 nad 3312. In addition I have asked for adobe connect licenses for both myself and our industrious tutor, Joe Dupuy. It is my understanding that will allow us to converse via computer screen syncrhonously with students. I think that will allow Joe to be available to students whether they come to campus or not.

We look forward to your input and feedback on how we can use Camtasia and Adobe Connect to improve your learing experience.

Duck Dynasty  in its fourth season open episode was watched by more than 11 million people. Fox News
Screen Shot 2013-09-06 at 1.13.57 PM examines this success story at the link.

Here is the link to the Official Duck Commander Website . I see they are hosting a cruise next summer, it is already booked. Note the number of events all over the country they are hosting.

This is A & E's most successful reality show ans the most watched on cable tv.

In a day of rappers composing songs of near all four letter words, this family is a welcome relief. No foul language , real values, a religious faith, a captialist success story, and lots of laughs, what's not to like?

I suspect this is a sort of throwback to the Andy Griffith show which was also in small town America featuring real values of real down to earth people.

My wife points out the President is addressing the nation on Syria next Tuesday night. That's cause he knows Duck Dynasty is on Wednesday, and who'd tune in the the President when you could be watching the Duckmen…

    Wednesday Sept  4 2013

Here is an opportunity to network on a monday night. I have class but students are certainly encouraged to sign up and attend.

By the way this is why we are staring a Toastmasters Club here. At such an event you have a short time to make a favorable impression. Will you be prepared?

    Be sure to

Dress appropriately, business casual, no thongs, shorts, etc

Have a business card with your name, e mail, cell phone, Identify yourself as a Texas A & M University San Antonio Student, yes spell that out, in the college of business, major, and expected graduation date. There is no point in gong it you do not take a card since then on one would have a way to contact you later.

Anticipate the small talk, be prepared when asked, well how is school there, to have an intelligent, coherent answer.

Example, well how is that school doing?

Wrong Answer, oh I finally found it, looks like it will last till I graduate!  (This is not funny)

Right Answer, I have been most impressed at the concern of faculty and the counselors over my future. the undergraduate accounting enrollment grew from 164 to 204 from Fall 2012 to Fall 2013.

or, well I did not know what to expect but have been pleasantly surprised, the parking is great, the prof had an extensive list of resources for us and a schedule of professional accountants coming to speak on campus

Be sure to ask the people you meet, what they do, where do they work, what has AWFA meant to them, what sort of programs do they have,

And it goes without saying that you will have read the website, see registration below, and familiarized yourself with the organization

Asking obvious questions that could have been answered by reading the website only  makes you look smaller, think about  it, registering, showing up, but failing to show enough interest to learn about it with questions like, hey what do y'all do here anyway, will not be well received.

    Okay, go get em…

    Dennis Elam

I have addressed this group and delivered Continuing Professional Education Hours.

At the beginning of the year, ASWA (American Society of Women Accountants) was renamed and rebranded as Accounting & Financial Women's Alliance (AFWA). This change reflects the organization's focus on women in accounting, finance, and related fields. AFWA reaches out to women to support their career and professional development with education, networking, and scholarships.
Please join the San Antonio chapter as it celebrates its new name and website with a launch and membership party. We will gather for networking and fun with our flight themed event – Reaching new heights with AFWA.

    Wed Sept 4 2013

I am planning a series for the blog titled The Class of '70. It will feature reminisces of my experience as an undergrad at UT Austin 1966-1970.

One feature of that era was an independent student newspaper. Administrations have pretty well stamped those out, but the rise of the internet can't keep an independent voice down.

The Aggie Guardian  is a newly launched student written independent paper at College Station. This particular article focuses on student fees. The author even supports Rick Perry who as he says would probably refund fees not spent.

Here is an article on outgiong President Loftin's demands for retirement.

Now here is the positive spin for our campus. A few semesters back when we were at St. Joe's a student showed up who had transferred back from College Station to finish here at her hometown of San Antonio. Her take was that she would save tens of thousands of dollars by finishing here. As an example she noted a parking sticker there was $350.

Another student appeared in one of my classes from yet another A & M branch. I am wondering if this will be a trend, stay here, get an A & M degree, save lots of bucks.

As a professor on this campus I am endeavoring to deliver the highest content courses possible. This semester I posted a lengthy list of free resources for study for accounting students. I continue to adddto the list.

We plan to add value to your degree by being efficient and affordable without unnecessary extravagance.   Let us know what you think.
