Katenzenberg of Dreamworks on the movies.

Note his discussion of costs and adapting to new delivery platforms. But I found his observation that being in a movie theater is great but in India they are watching movies on cell phones. I will pass on watching the movie on the cell phone…

I do agree that great stories make the movie, this means more outlets for budding writers and film makers.

Drought relief SAWS is offering their Drought Relief Kit.

Thos of you working on the Cactua Flower Project (graduate course)  should take note.

I believe that this is very much a project that is timely and green.

As SAWS says, do not let the recent rains deceive you about the need to conserve water. I believe that we will never leave water rationing.

I have now posted some ideas on local coffee shops as well as these drought relief ideas, I will be glad to post ideas, photos, links that you have which support these project ideas.

The WSJ reports that Republicans are not profiting from dissatisfaction with Washington DC as usual.

I am not surprised. Harry Browne as the libertarian candidate for President wrote Why Government Doesn't Work. He theorized that if either political party were to disappear, it would much more likely be the Republicans, not the Dems. As he said, the Dems are all about telling you what to do and there is always a market for that. What do the Republicans stand for, no one knows?  That was in 1995 written as the Republicans took over Congress, now they have been tossed out. Their rejection at Tea Parties suggests this is the correct interpretation. Reagan was the exception not the typical Republican product which is much more along the lines of Ford, Dole, Bush, no innovation there!

The overall social mood is negative, and that is going to be reflected in low ratings for ALL existing parties. The approval rate for congress is less than 20%, and that was true when Bush was on his way out of office. Neither party is grasping that BOTH of them now rate low in the polls as to approval ratings.

Their conventional wisdom of course is that if one is doing bad, the other will benefit, as the WSJ article reports this is not the case.

In a bear market opinion will savage all existing conventional players. Our template is the 1970s, look what happened to

    Richard Nixon R

    Gerald Ford R

    Jimmy Carter D

    Tip O'Neil D

    Dan Rostenkowsi D

Conservative Dem governors in Texas thrown out for the first time in decades, no one voted for Bill Clements until after he was elected, that was his take on it….

Scott Burns the financial writer said that if his e mail was correct the last national election would be the last one when there were only two parties. Republicans came to office as the Civil War started. Such landmark events, like this economic depression, bring startling change.

There are governor elections next week in Virginia and New Jersey and congressional elections in New York and California, I expect narrow results with no one able to claim a clear victory.

Those of you working on the coffee shop case might start exploring neighborhood shops in the area.

La Taza is in my neighborhood, take a look.

Picture 7 Mocha Java now has three locations in San Marcos. How many other examples are there of independent coffee shops can you find in the area?

Gee I don't mean to make this too easy but you should then benchmark what they are doing for the success of your proposed venture.

Shell will be cutting jobs, and existing employess will be re applying for work.

Meanwhile British Petroleum, aka Amoco, is doing much better. Shell used to be one of the best, then execs mismanaged and misrepresented reserves resulting in investor distrust of Shell.

The international oil business is necessarily a long term proposition. Ethics matter. Short term lies about real assets can have long term consequences.

Prof Wayne Coleman, Barbara Hewitt, and yours truly attended the San Antonio Tech conference yesterday.

The afternoon session featured an elevator pitch contest, pitch your idea and request for capital in 90 seconds. It took three or four presenters before I realized this was for real! The audience judged the winners. A few observations.

    Don't

Read from notes, this would not be possible on an elevator

And it suggests that you are too technical as you yourself cannot remember what you are trying to say

    Go over your time

Have your t shirt undershirt sticking out below your shirt

    Name your foundation after yourself

use high pitched declarations for emphasis

    Do

Speak slowly in a measured voice that can be easily heard

Use eye contact the whole time with your audience, it seems much more genuine

We are not all fashion models, no problem avoid tight fitting clothes that suggest that indeed, you are not a fashion model

Practice in front of a mirror, would you buy your story?

KISS Keep it simple silly, avoid technical terms, what you are really trying to do is to get an invite for a longer presentation, keep this one simple, sell the sizzle, not the steak

It is a tradition in 'steak house' restaurants to often have the chef on display cooking the steaks on an open grill, this is for good reason, the smell of burning steak fat appeals to our cave man instincts, the restaurant is selling the sizzle, do the same in your presentations.
