Here are some Design Favorites  from Fast Company .  Okay sound off gang, what are your favorite things, that sport coat that fits just right, a kitchen gadget, a tool in the garage, a camera, is there one great cell phone, what?

You will notice I have been talking about design and its importance, the fact that Fast Company continues to emphasize it suggests that we are on to something here.

Here is an article by Peter Lawrence  that defines the whole design idea.

One aspect of design that seems so difficult for designers to me is that of utilitarianism. That is doing the greatest good for the greatest amount of people. Throgh my journey of life, I have discovered that everybody at one time will never be happy! How is it that designers are able to create something and many people take heed to the design? In the article I found that designers work with many poeple to try get a product started and completed. I have noticed, from the garden tool highlighted by Fast, the ipod, even to ball point pens, is that many more simple designs are coming into play. Yet, a simple design may not be the answer also. In the BMW article listed above, it mentions how the idrive was not a success. This was because there was no communication of the capabilities of the design. Communitcation of your design to consumer is an integral part in your design being a sucess. Look at the operating system you are looking at right now, Microsoft Windows. Microsoft constantly seeking ways to improve its design of Windows, yet they always include aspects from its previous version not to alienate the consumer from its product. (BTW: my favorite things: the ipod, Chevrolet Corvette, plasma tvs!)

Bryan managed to mix philosophy and design! One of my ideas with the blog was that we would get to know one another better. I just replaced my aging Sony Home Theater Audio receiver wtih a Yamaha Home Theater version. My old CD player is gigantic and I don’t have the room for it, and then the usefulness of the iPod dawned on me. I am thinking I could get the 30 GB with the 2.5 screen, display photos and put all my songs from CDs and i tunes on it and then ust plug and play on the Yamaha with great fidelity. Any other comments about iPods. Oh Bryan I drove an absolutely gorgeous 2001 Vette in Bowling Green exterior with tan leather and the six speed, let the clutch out and you are going 60 mph. The car had such awesome capabilities I could not figure out where I could use even half its potential, hmmm, but then I saw a Z 3 BMW on E bay with the M option motor, but now I don’t live in the hill country any more with those gorgeous hills to drive, gee is this rationalizing an iPod purchase or what…

A couple of my favorite things are two simple kitchen gadgets found at The Container Store. They are an apple corer/slicer and a mango corer/slicer. Who new that something so simple could make life so great! These simple gadgets make preparing fruit so easy. There’s no plugging in, no motors, just place the circular gadget over the apple/mango(depending on which one) and boom your fruit is cored and sliced. The gadgets are circles about the size of my hand with metal blades that slice through the apple/mango when placed over and pressed down. So easy that my kids can do it, which is great because it gives them an incentive for eating fruit. (Kids are so easy to please.)

The one gadget that just amazes me is the traveldrive — a small metal stick-figure that can hold data. From a floppy disk to this USB drive — how much small will we go???
