The Editor of Motor Trend discusses the re invention of Ford in this article. Now my question is, will CITI have to do the same thing?  See the last post about CITI and its all of a sudden capital shortage.  Now CITI will have to do what Ford is doing, sell the good assets to preserve what is left!

    Question:
If Ford is selling off Aston Martin, Jaguar, etc. Who’s buying? Are Aston Martin and Jaguar buying themselves out of Ford? Is that the case here?

This was a very interesting article. After all these years Ford now has decided to get back down to the basics and is now starting to focus on those four key elements. They are also selling off some of their other brand names such as jaguar. I think this is what ford needs to do to help preserve themselves. As for CITI I believe they need to do something similar like ford such as finding some key elements to focus on, selling off some of their assets to raise their capital. The reason for all their losses is similar to that of Merrill Lynch isn’t it?

    Professor Elam,
Good morning! I think that the changes and adjustments Ford is now making is exactly what they need in order to regain a foothold in the industry again. With Mulally coming in with a distinctive view of what the company needs to survive, I believe that they are headed in the right direction. CITIgroup needs to also follow in fords steps and sell its assets in order to gain more capital. If they can change their normal routine to something similar to fords, I believe that they can also start heading in the right direction.

Finding key elements to focus on?
How about sticking with a strategy that avoids unnecessary risk. Will selling Jag preserve Ford, why does selling Jag make people want to buy a Ford, it does not, that is the problem, can the new CEO convince folks to buy Fords in the next two years, selling Jag only raises money, not awareness of the Ford brand.
CITI was down 4.85% just today. Selling assets to raise capital, think what that phrase means. We have to sell the good stuff to keep the rest afloat, never a good option but the only one. Both companies remain in big trouble.
