Governor Perry Opposes Unemployment Extension

Gov Perry  wrote an op ed explaining his position in the Sunday SA Express News. 

The Governor's position is interesting and constructive. He opposes taking Federal money for the reason that this will extend unemployment benefits. These must be paid by state employers. The Governor believes that more taxes on  potential employers is not the answer.

    I support Gov Perry on this. A temporary extension of unemployment comp that would require permanant changes in the state system would cause problems down the road. Texas is already on the verge of not having money for unemployment compensation. However, people in general tend to become dependent upon this assistance. It does prevent productivity to a certain extent. Currently the max weekly unemployment comp that can be received is $392. With the stimulus package, there is an additional $25 available. Someone eligible for full beneifts would receive $417 per week. Turn this into a monthly number and they get $1807 per month. To make getting a job worth it, the job would have to pay that much after taxes. The unemployment comp is only for 26 weeks, but it still encourages someone not to work. This could be looked at as temporary welfare. If the unemployment was not available, people would be working much harder to get a job.
