One of my goals as your Professor of Accouting is to reach out to the business community of San Antonio. I want that community to know we are here.  In that regard I will be making a presentation at the July monthly meeting of the San Antonio Chaper of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

This will be Wed July 8, networking at 11:30 CPE session featuring fascinating presentation by yours truly at Noon.

Students are welcome and urged to attend. This would be a good chance to network with area professionals.

This hotel is at the NE corner if I 10 and NE 410 BUT to access the hotel it is necessary to be traveling west on the 410 access road headed to I 10. If you go north of I 10 there is no exit for the hotel and backtracking is most difficult.

Further I have invited Arlena Sones, Presdient of SA IIA to speak to our intermed class.  Date to be announced.

Unfortunately I missed it. I really would have liked to attend. I really appreciate that you are out there for us. I did want to make a comment regarding something you said in class regarding GPA’s. You stated that your transcript was never really looked at when applying for jobs. I have to disagree with you here. I have applied for a couple of internships and the first thing they ask is what my GPA is. It’s unfortunate but this is a major component of our transcripts and our future. It seems that this is priority #1. I spoke with someone from Ernst & Young and they stated that if my GPA was below a 3.0 they wanted an explanation of why this was. I understand a GPA is important but does it truly state the abilities of the student. I await your feedback.

I think I stand properly corrected. My grades were such that there was not an issue about being borderline. But as you say now a 3.0 is pretty much a cut off, indeed students at UT where internships are required who have less than a 3.0, well UT admitted to me those students have a tough time.
Given the various scams going on, it is also true that employers including universities require sealed transcripts from your university be sent to them, clearly falsifying transcripts is a big business.
THe presentation went well, two former students came and as my eyes were dilated that moorn at the opthamologist (see expect the unusual and be prepared) I had one of the students help read part of my presentation, so that worked very well.
We made a fine impression on the group I think.

The interaction between the business community and institutions of higher learning is always a positive factor to enhance students ability to be much more aware of events and changes that develope in the real world of accounting. The high tech power point method was an interesting twist to look at business changes through a period of years.
