WE received this e mail about a staffer at Kingsville. I am posing it not to promote this particular certification but to make the point that certifications are all the rage. Which is what I have been saying in class and on this blog…The trend is to set up certifications like this in niche professions, like purchasing manager. Usually one has to be employed in that profession to even be able to sit for the exam. And so the so called certification becomes a way to exclude outsiders from the profession. For example, it is impossible to be a public school superintendent in Texas without, you guessed it, a superintendent certificate. This assures that the same group that has produced lackluster grads for the last twenty years putting Texas behind various Eastern European countries in math will stay in charge.

Please join me in congratulating XXXX on passing the Certified Texas Purchaser (CTP) test.  She has successfully completed the training and testing requirements and will be fully certified once she completes the application This is quite an accomplishment as XXXX  is developing professional skills as a career purchasing agent.  She has already set her next goal, Certified Texas Procurement Manager.

Yesterday, I received an email from a co-worker who happens to be “Certified Cost Accountant”, “Certified Budgeting Professional”, “Certified Human Resources Manager”, and certified in other things too.
I would like to know if such certs are considered “reputable” and if they represent any advantages. Do you think we should take them in addition to the well known certs (CMA,CIA,CPA,etc)?
Also, some organizations offer their “certification” to anyone who is a CMA,CPA,etc without asking them to pass any examination. (But they still have to pay for annual memberships). Do you think it’s ok and ethical to do so?

Good questions all, there is definitely a market in which one can ‘sell’ certifications. This is particularly true among people who do not care to take the real thing or who have failed. At this Point in accounting I would say
    CPA
    CIA
    CMA
    Enrolled Agent
and there are some others, Wendi Taber that spoke to the class had some computer certications. I will visit with her about that. The ones above all require an extensive four part examination and prep courses are offered, they are not a or a send me a pay pal amount and you are in. I do think that if there is an exam involved it would be good practice to take one of these before one of the more difficult exams, just to fine tune your preparedness. I am not familiar with the ones you mention but as you say we see more and more of this every day.

Wendi Taber is a CPA and
    Certified Information Systems Auditor CISA
    Certified Information Technology Professional CITP
Both are listed on the certification page and I did ask for her take on that. I am sure these are quite worthwhile if she has them.
