Having worked for several years before starting my education journey, I take each and every lecture, test, project, etc personally. Having worked two full-time jobs, and at times juggling a third to “survive” in real America makes me appreciate every day I am here. Yes, people younger than myself lack social skills and believe things they want should be handed to them. Real life isn’t that way. Imagine having someone hired, you train them and they are YOUR BOSS. Why weren’t you promoted to the position? Because you don’t have a DEGREE. That is why I am in college, living my dream. I want the chance to help someone in a few years that is “stuck in the rut” that I felt I was. I want to be an example that if you set your mind to it, you can do anything, that includes getting a college education. However, no education can provide professionalism. You need to remember to thank those along the way that have helped you. Kindness, while considered “wimpy” goes along way. Can you tell me the name of the women and men that work as janitors at A&M? Do you realize they matter as much as the department heads? Its the little things that matter. Everyone likes to be recognized for their contribution. Again, a skill that cannot be taught, you either have it or you don’t…
Okay, putting my soap box away….

As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. The more one is able to use their presentational skills, the more they are abel to fine tune them.

In my opinion, technology is partly to blame for the lack of professionalism. At this day in age, everything has been put at the tip of our finger tips. We are no longer utilizing our verbal communication skills but instead texting and emailing. I think human one on one interation is very important when learning how to work in a professional enviroment. I agree with the previous blogger, experience is everything. You cannot teach someone how to act respectful and professional. You must have a strong foundation of principals which are instilled at a young age. I was in the military for 5 years right out of high school. This gave me a basic understanding of professionalism and discipline. In the Air Force you must earn your freedom in basic training and work hard to make rank. This is not something that is given based on time served. This prevents those who are not motivated from being promoted to serve as leaders.
I do agree, there are members of the younger generation that act as though they are doing the company a favor by working there and deserve pay whether or not they are completing their assigned tasks.

There was a time in a prior life where you had to dress professionally to come to a business class in college. Shirt and tie were a minimum. That was also back when personal responsibility and accountability were required in all aspects of life; your home, school, work and social life. When accountability and responsibility are no longer required, decline will follow. This is a perfect example of that, and, as much as I hate to admit it, I have fallen victim as well. Lauren is spot on with the technology issue and learning at a young age. We need to require and expect better from ourselves and others. We need to set better standards and enforce good or bad consequences for those actions.
