We are studying Deming's TQM ideas and later we will study standards in cost managerial class. ISO standards are in independently confirmed rating that a company uses such standards as metrics in its process.
How important is this. Well I noticed Fujifilm takes the rather seriously. Click to see how they proudly list their accomplishment.
While it is an achievement, I am curious as to how objective and reliable the rating system is. By that, I mean, there must be extreme pressure for a company to be able to tout its ISO status (most especially if the company passed). My concern is along the lines of the integrity of the rating agency. I have never heard of any scandal erupting over the rating system nor of any challenges to the ratings. This could be because the integrity has never been breached… OR, because the system can be easily manipulated. Of course, I’m not an expert. Have there been scandals?

I suspect this is a case of filling out the right blanks on the ISO forms and sending your people to ISO training camp, this reminds me, now that you mention it, of a recent AACSB training camp I attended for colleges.

That is exactly my point. So the company fills out the forms, sends their folks to training, and tadah! they’re certified! Is that how it works? Is there no agency verifying the system? Who’s to say the company isn’t qualified? Who’s to say the company is? If these questions can be answered such that the ISO program retains its integrity, then the rating is credible. If not, then what’s the point? Do we, as auditors (if that’s what we are), verify the ISO rating? If so, wow!

Chill! Yes as auditors the ISO rating has to be verified by an outside group of experts who are certified as to the standards.
