Thanksgiving Day Nov 22 2012

The headline in the Express News today is a negative report from the Ag's office over the management of the Alamo by hte DRT. Even Senator Leticia van de Putte sponsored a bill ending the DRT 106 year run as the Alamo custodian.

I have read the overall reason for the investigation. it looks like a whistle blower pointed out internal strife and decsions exceeding the authority of the DRT. The end result, the DRT was not hauled into court but was given the boot.

As future professional accountants, this would be a good report to read about exceeding authority. There is a link to the PDF the AG produced. This is an audit of sorts, and one that landed the DRT on the front page. This is a poor way to exit 106 years as caretaker.

After reading the article it’s actually quite appalling that this story hasn’t received more local coverage. The Alamo is the face of San Antonio, along with the riverwalk it’s what the city is know for. The investigation began due to whistleblower, which doesn’t surprise me because most wrongdoing is reported from someone that has experienced and seen the actions first hand. It does take courage to stand up and report to higher authorities. In the article Huddleston stated, “In a prepared statement, Thompson said it did not account for recent changes in DRT leadership, bylaw revisions, external audits and new financial controls.” How does an organization not account for external audits and new financial controls? How does this go unnoticed? In a way it still worries me that the DRT still has a hand in the Alamo, with them running the day-to-day operations. I wonder how the reporting for that is being handled.
