I have involved myself with Astronomy since the age of 8 and I can say that this is indeed a very special picture/scan. I have seen variations of this picture over the years ( the last one I remember seeing was Summer 2011) that included a shot when portions of the east coast were under a blackout. What a difference. Can you imagine being born and raised in an area that is constantly flooded with light-pollution and never really being able to see a night sky for what it is? In the heavily populated areas, during a blackout the phone rings off the hook with people reporting strange lights and UFOs that turn out to be bright stars and planets. This picture reminds me of the movie Deck the Halls.

Hardly anyone other than astronomers does what you suggest, it is no wonder that in ancient times the pre occupation was laying around watching the universe move, what a show, and as you say wihtout night time light pollution, it is truly stunning, now that I think about it that first telescope must have had everyone talking
