Texas Sales Tax Holiday

The Texas Comptroller has announced the Sales Tax Holiday is moved back a week. Notice the emphasis this gets. Now if repealing sales taxes for a few days stimulates, sales, imagine how much a general tax reduction would increase sales!  Why not less government, less taxes, more sales?  Hello Milton Friedman

 

August 9-11: New 2013 Sales Tax Holiday Dates

The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013)changes the dates of this year's annual Sales Tax Holiday to Aug. 9-11, a week earlier than previously scheduled. The law became effective immediately.

The Sales Tax Holiday gives Texas shoppers a break from state and local sales taxes on most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100. Shoppers can save up to $8.25 for every $100 they spend.

    Oh I know, here is the theory (its a partial adoption of Kneyes economics): 1: a tax holiday attacks and shocks the consumers buy or not to buy emotions. 2: by limiting it to only a few days and then ending you have to realize that the state is counting on continued buying following the holiday which will be taxed at full rates. 3: Get people spending and they will continue to spend without regard to tax’s.
    Now understand this runs into one problem if people plan well this holiday could cut into the state tax revenue system. However the idea that people actually plan their spending, buy only what they need and will need for the upcomming year is not very likely.
    So the state gets people to buy stuff, the people will continue to buy (that one extra thing or a dozen extra things), and this way the state makes its revenue targets.
