Well I took the time to watch that trainwreck and I have a few distinct thoughts, most of them are from the point of view of achieving strategic goals. A: if the goal was to distance miley from hannah, the 100% success. B: if the goal was to generate buzz again 100% success, C: if it was to promote a single item (ie a record) then 100% success. D: if it was to create a loyal fan base and generate self sustaining goals, abject failure.
There is a saying in hollywood: anything is good press so long as you don’t get caught with a live (same sex person) in a comprimising situation or a dead “professional sex associate”. The point is that this appears to be miley looking at history and stealing shamelessly from it (I can clearly see madona, marilyn manson theme’s across it) the problem is that in those instances there was no attempt to distance from a past view instead both marilyn and madona were trying very hard to retain their already loyal fan base through shock and awe. What miley did might have been cool from a short term marketing point, it was uncool as a name branding event.

Miley appears to be an echo of Madonna and then Lady Gaga

Clearly Miley is emulating Lady Gaga, who (as I pointed out to my mother the other day) is more of a female-friendly pop version of Marilyn Manson. While slightly disturbing, I can’t say the shocking performance was necessarily a bad idea. The average age of the original Hannah Montana fan base is 18-21 — too old for the Disney version to be cool anymore. Anything risque or outlandish would be considered comical and amusing (catering to the rebellious stage). As Cary said, it distances Miley from Hannah. This move also helps hinder the possible realization by these young adults that the girl can’t dance and has a mediocre voice. She fits in with the Kardashians in the “famous for being famous” category. I imagine most of her fans do consider it cool, and she perhaps gained some new fans who originally considered her “good girl” Disney Channel side uncool. This so-called “performance” is most likely advantageous for the short-term. If she can find a way to mature her theatrics as her audience matures, she’ll maintain her demand and continue her career in show biz.

a well done critique, in the 1950s jayne mansfield had this role, lots of looks with minimal acting and no singing skills

A winner or winning is what makes a brand cool. Nike is the name of the Goddess of Victory.

Well, Tiger’s sponsors still mostly pulled out on him even though he had a winning record, the ad that suggested he was cool for winning was not well received, but then Mike Vick is back playing football…
