Mark Goldman, President SA CPA Society, has some valuable thoughts on passing the CPA exam.
He is right the sooner the better. I returned to UT Austin to study for the entire semester while taking review classes, otherwise I would not have had a chance at passing.
Also I would think it would depend the what department you find yourself in. Would really like that as a survey parameter. People who have had a majority of work experience up until taking in A/P and A/R or Financial/External Reporting or Tax and Treasury. Wonder what the pass rates would be then compared by departments.

It did help me that I hd been an internal auditor on the audit exam. And experience in preparing tax returns clearly helps on the regulation exam. in regard to tax. However real experience in various departments is not of a lot of help on an academic exam like CPA. The candidate must be able to answer 100 questions in no more than two minutes per question. And number 99 counts as much as number 2, so concentration and endurance count for a lot. The only way to achieve that level of expertise is by taking lots of tests under timed conditions. It is an academic not a proficiency exam.
