   While I’m for affordable tuition I don’t understand those who forgo a state college for a private one if both programs are comparable. One of the many part time jobs I had while at TAMUSA was working at a retail store, many of the management would be those who graduated from local private schools with liberal arts degrees(philosophy, art history, literature, theatre) All I ever wondered was did these people not know that the market for philosophers, poets, and thespians is severely limited at best? I always bring up that argument and I’m answered with “the world needs creative minds” or something like that but when your going into several thousand dollars worth of debt, and best yet your parents are most likely cosigning it with you, why put that much of a burden on your family? If you get one of those degrees fine but please get a teaching cert also, or double major in a practical field(business, medical, science)
   While I do have sympathy for people who struggle with loans I know its possible to do it with little to no dependence on them. I worked 3 jobs at a time, kept the same car I bought used when I first graduated HS, applied for scholarships. I know everyone’s situation is different but there’s no need to go into major debt for a degree from a private college that isn’t an Ivy League school.

   Indeed, just this past weekend another professor and I chatted with the gal at the cash register at starbucks, she was working to save to go back to Baylor, Idoubt you would save enough if you owned that starbucks store outright. Interesting observation that the store managers are all liberal arts majors. At Texas State I once asked State Farm if they wanted to sponsor an insurance agent program ,they replied heck no, all our agents are liberal arts majors.
